It’s official, the 145th Kentucky Derby is less than a week away! Are you ready for the run for the roses? I’m beyond excited! I have been planning my annual bar cart for weeks now. I wasn’t sure if I’d go with traditional red roses or light blush roses and gold accents. Since I went with light blush tones when Justify won the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes last year, I decided to go with traditional decor and red roses, especially since they’re in bloom now.
Like many of you, I look forward to the Kentucky Derby year after year! It’s a big day in our household. We love the gorgeous hats and fascinators, the fancy dresses, fabulous decor and of course a great mint julep or mint lemonade.
Are you looking to decorate your home or a Kentucky Derby inspired bar cart? There are so many fabulous, fun and absolutely beautiful decor tips online! It’s easy to be inspired. I did a little shopping at a few of my favorite stores online and picked quite a few items that I’m completely in love with. I must admit though, I love my Kentucky Derby inspired cupcake toppers more than anything! I’m obsessed with them. They really helped me decide how I wanted to decorate my bar cart. Since they have red accents, I was sure that was the color palette I would use!
Here are a few of my favorite Kentucky Derby bar cart ideas for those looking to go with a traditional, classic and trendy decor theme.
First Comes First, The Gold Bar Cart
If you know me, you know I absolutely adore gold decor items! Gold is classic, chic and timeless. You can dress it up or down with blush pink, red, black, white and just about any color on the planet. I bought this faux bamboo gold bar cart about three years ago, and simply adore it. I use it for pretty much every holiday or occasion – from Christmas to the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Tiger Woods most recent Masters win!
I love mine because it’s wide, and I can fit quite a bit on both shelves. I’ve thought about getting a three tier bar cart just for entertaining and storing signature drinks/cocktails when throwing parties. There are so many options! Here are a few of my favorite gold bar carts in a variety of styles.

How I Made My Horse Wreath
I fell in love with this horse wire wreath form a few years ago, and last year I finally bought it! My mom and I decorated it with moss last year and it still looks amazing. It was very easy to use. We just hot glued the moss to the wreath form. It’s perfectly intact. For those who don’t know, my mom and I have a flower farm where we grow garden roses. I hot glued quite a few red traviata roses for the “bridle.” I love how it turned out! I hung it above my bar cart just in time for the Kentucky Derby this Saturday. I absolutely love it, and want to keep it out throughout the year!
While there might not be enough time to buy this wreath form for the Derby this weekend, I did find a DIY horse wreath form online! Here’s the link.
If you’d like to buy a horse wire wreath form for next year’s Derby or if you’d like to get one for a Derby shower or party any time of the year, you’re in luck! I’ve shared a few you can shop below.

Garden Roses Are A Must For Your Kentucky Derby Bar Cart
It’s no secret, red roses are the official flower of the Kentucky Derby! As someone who was born on National Red Rose Day (June 12th) I feel it is my duty to share absolutely gorgeous red roses for the 145th run for the roses! Red traviata is one of my favorite garden roses on the planet. It’s lush, gorgeous and very durable! This cut rose will last for days upon days in a vase. I highly recommend this rose!
Obsessed with Mackenzie Childs Vases
There’s nothing more classic and chic in my home than Mackenzie-Childs courtly check in black and white. A few years ago I splurged on quite a few Mackenzie-Childs items for my kitchen and I’ve never looked back. Instead of shopping for trendy decor that will be a fad in a few years, I’ve decided to spend a little more for Mackenzie-Childs as I know I will adore it for decades to come. In my opinion it’s cheaper to buy what you want in the first place! Not only will it last, you’ll be happier that you didn’t settle and you won’t sell it for a quarter at a garage sale in a few years.
With that being said, I decided to fill one of my Mackenzie-Childs black and white courtly check large canisters with red roses! This canister is much cheaper than most of their vases. The best part is it’ll hold long stems!
Here are a few of my favorite Mackenzie-Childs vases and the canister I own and use as a vase!

Traditional Mint Julep Cups
If there’s one thing every Kentucky Derby bar cart needs whether it’s trendy or traditional, it’s definitely mint juleps in mint julep cups! We planted spearmint in our yard a few years ago, and it’s taken off everywhere. It makes it so easy when making mint juleps!
Are you shopping for a few new mint julep cups for a Derby party or Derby inspired shower? If so, you’re in luck. Here are a few I found at some of my favorite retailers.

Horse Inspired Garland and Decor
Every Kentucky Derby bar cart needs garland, and horse inspired decor! Last year I bought this cute and inexpensive horse racing inspired garland at Amazon. It comes with ribbon and quite a few racing horses, so you can make it as long or as short as you’d like. I’m going to make it longer this weekend and hang it on my mantel.
On this bar cart I added a horse figurine, my trophy measuring cups and my celebratory Yay champagne glass! Who are you rooting for? I’m a huge fan of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, so I’m going with Improbably, Mucho Gusto or Game Winner! How about you? Who are you going with on Saturday, May 4, 2019?

Cake Stands Add Height To Any Bar Cart Display
Since buying my bar cart I have added two new cake stands to my collection! The reason is they add height to any display. As you can see in the photos above, I used them for my cupcake display, and on the second shelf, I used them to store my mint juleps. There are so many trendy cake stands to choose from! Here are a few favorites.

Kentucky Derby Cupcake Toppers
These cupcake toppers are my absolute favorite! I fell in love with them when I first spotted the gold glitter trophy, the gold glitter horse head with a red rose collar, the woman with the red hat, and the racing horse which is also in gold! Aren’t they gorgeous? I highly recommend them.
These are just a few of my favorite Kentucky Derby bar cart essentials! There are so many fun ways to decorate your bar cart and your home in general in time for the 145th run for the roses. I’d love to see how you decorate yours!
PS: Here are a few outtakes of my dogs and my Kentucky Derby bar cart. My Weimaraner, Fred and Yorkie, Francesca were hoping they could steal a few cupcakes. No such luck guys 😉
