On Wednesday March 21st, I had the pleasure of participating in a media conference call with Bob Weir, one of the founding members of the legendary rock band the Grateful Dead; along with Scott and Bryan Devendorf of The National. They’ll be playing in “The Bridge Session” a free live webcast concert that will be broadcast on Yahoo! Music tonight (9pm ET/6pm PT).
The concert is taking place at Bob Weir’s TRI Studios (Tamalpais Research Institute) based in Northern California, which according to the official website (Tri Studios) is ‘the vision of Bob Weir. Weir and his team have built a state-of-the-art performance studio for broadcasting live HD video and audio streams directly to the internet. TRI is a virtual venue where fans can gather and enjoy the performances in the comfort of their own homes, or anywhere they have internet access.”
“The Bridge Session” is being produced by Headcount ‘a non-partisan voter registration and civic organization’, which Bob Weir is a board member of. Music sets will include Grateful Dead songs, songs by The National and covers (all performed by Bob Weir and The National), and in between music sets a political roundtable of political figures and activists will also be taking place. The panelists set to be in attendance are: independent Presidential candidate Buddy Roemer, No Labels co-founder Mark McKinnon (a former media advisor to George W. Bush, John McCain, Bono and Lance Armstrong), climate change activist Jessy Tolan, and Grateful Dead lyricist and Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) co-founder John Perry Barlow. The topics up for discussion include- getting money out of politics, protecting the First Amendment and the 2012 Presidential Election.
Viewers will have a chance to participate in the discussion via Twitter by typing @TRI_STUDIOS with hashtag #BridgeSession. The best tweets will be utilized during the panel.
During the call when Bob Weir was asked how he advises voters to choose a candidate, he offered this advice:
“Go to websites, pay attention to what they say in the media. Go to events. Roll up your sleeves and do a little research.”
When asked why do this (“The Bridge Session”), this year? Weir responded:
“Election year. It’s on peoples minds. It’s everywhere you look right now.”
“I’ve always voted since I was able to.”
Will there be a future collaboration with The National?
Bob Weir: “One step at a time. If this is fun enough…you bet. We know it’s going to be good. If it lights us up you’re going to hear more of it.”
“We’re just looking forward to it being a fun time.”
Bob Weir fans will be pleased to know that Weir will be doing a solo tour and according to him “some of the stuff will end up in the solo show.”
Enjoy this preview of tonight’s concert! Be sure to tune into Yahoo! Music tonight at 9pm ET/6pm PT to not only witness this great collaboration with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead along with Scott and Bryan Devendorf The National, but to participate in this historic event!
