I recently had the great pleasure of speaking with model and handbag designer, Camila Alves McConaughey to discuss her new line, Muxo by Camila Alves McConaughey which is scheduled to launch TODAY at 10 PM (ET) during QVC’s presentation of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – Live from New York.
Camila Alves McConaughey – Life
Candace Rose: How and when did you decide you wanted to be a fashion designer?
Camila Alves McConaughey: Design was something that I was always loved from a very young age. My mother, who I created the line with, has a background in design and I was always interested in that part of the industry when I was modeling. I wanted to create something that wasn’t already in the market and was unique. I wanted to give people something that was exactly what they needed. Something fashionable but sensible- and I had a vision of what I wanted that to be.
CR: What does MUXO stand for?
CA: MUXO is Oxum backwards. Oxum is an African river goddess who stands for love, intimacy, beauty, wealth and diplomacy.
Candace Rose: You and your mother created the Muxo line, can you tell us more about it and what it’s like working with your mom?
Camila Alves McConaughey: I started the company for my mother. I wanted her to do something in her professional field and I also wanted to help out the family. It was something we started together and still to this day it is just me and her. Family is number one for me and I have a great time working with my mom.
Candace Rose: What (or who) has inspired you most as a designer?
Camila Alves McConaughey: We used a lot of inspirations from the places we have spent a lot of time, like Brazil and New York City. Both places are cultural melting pots—sophisticated yet laid back and unique.
Candace Rose: What should we expect to see when your line launches on February 11th on QVC?
Camila Alves McConaughey: Quality, durability, practicality and a product that is unique. We also focus on having the handbags be very lightweight. As always, we are using hand selected leathers that improve with use and time.
Candace Rose: Do you have any advice for fellow designers?
Camila Alves McConaughey: I would just say that you should take inspiration from where you come from, what you see there is a need for, and how you can accomplish that.
Many thanks to Ms. Camila Alves McConaughey for taking time out of her busy schedule to share her new line with us! Please be sure to tune into QVC tonight at 10 PM (ET)! She’ll also be appearing on QVC, Friday, February 25 at 9 PM (ET) during The Buzz on the Red Carpet – Live from L.A.
