I make donations monthly to a few of my favorite charities, and always give more during the holiday season when times tend to be hardest for folks. I always make sure and do my research before making a donation to a new charity, so I can ensure my money is going to a reputable charity and it’s important to know how it will be spent.
I recently learned about Direct Relief, one of the nation’s highest rated and most reputable NGOs (non-governmental organizations). According to their website, they are “a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 states and 70 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies.” With public trust in charities at an eight-year low, I was happy to learn that they are rated number one. Charity Navigator, which is America’s largest independent evaluator of charities gave them four out of four stars!
Thomas Tighe, president and CEO of Direct Relief was kind enough to join me for an interview this week to discuss how people can sort through charities, how charities are rated and what the ratings mean. He also shared the importance of giving back, and much more.
