Type 2 diabetes runs in my family on both sides, and just a few months ago it got a bit scarier as my brother learned he too suffers from the disease. His recent diagnosis has terrified me into making lifestyle changes – I’m exercising more, I’ve started to eat healthier, and I’m doing my best to eliminate sugar, but as you can well imagine it isn’t easy. I’m doing my best and have had a few rough patches. As someone who is a big fan of Today Nutritionist Joy Bauer and her healthy living tips, I was excited to see that she was on the Today show this morning sharing dietary tips for type 2 diabetes sufferers and those with a family history (or other risk factors) and are trying to prevent getting the disease.
Savannah Guthrie stated that “According to one report, over half of all Americans could have diabetes or pre-diabetes by the year 2020.” With that being said, Joy Bauer shared some healthy and delicious food swaps we can all appreciate and use. For example – did you know that croutons are made with refined sugar? I love to top my salad with croutons, but Joy stated that toasted nuts or chickpeas would be better options because “they’re naturally low in carb” and have other healthy benefits.
If you’re hooked on ranch or thousand island dressing, Joy dished that a dressing with any type of vinegar in it is much healthier because it “slows down the absorption of carbohydrate in your gut”.
Lastly, if you love meatballs which are typically made with bread crumbs, you’ll want to swap them with oats because they have fiber. All of these healthy living tips will hopefully help prevent you from getting any blood sugar spikes and keep your levels steady. Which food swap are you looking to try first?
