Believe it or not, but back to school is finally here! If you’re on the hunt for the hottest fashion and beauty trends at deep discounts, you’re in luck. “Teen Vogue” magazine’s Beauty and Health Director, Elaine Welteroth joined me for an interview this morning to dish on the trendiest clothing young ladies will adore this fall when they head back to school, the top beauty trends, and how to score everything on the cheap with Back to School Saturday!
Candace Rose: What are some of the top trends students will be seeing this season?
Elaine Welteroth: “The must haves for back to school are all laid out here. One of our favorite items is this great puffer coat (please see video above for details) it’s metallic, so it gets this luxe update for fall. This one is from H&M.
Another great transitional piece that you can throw over anything when you’re layering is a great quilted vest. We love this one from Abercrombie because it’s a nice Army green that matches everything.
And of course for back to school it’s all about the denim. We’re really into the high waisted style right now. You’ll also see a lot of rocker chic inspired denim with sort of metallic accents and pinstripes from Hudson.
At ‘Teen Vogue’ we’re absolutely mad for plaid. There are so many different ways to wear it for back to school. Our favorite is the sort of 60s spin on mini mod dresses and mod skirts (like the ones you see in the video above). These are from Abercrombie.
Obviously accessories are key when it comes to back to school shopping. The key staples are here in front of me – classic white on white sneakers…you cannot go wrong. Look for one with a high top style like these from Vans. When it comes to the all important backpack you want something that shows off your personal style, and for us we’re really into ‘Star Wars’ right now and this sort of intergalactic theme, we sat it at the runways at Rodarte, so we love this one here (Galaxy Realm) from Vans.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any tips on how to get these looks for less?
Elaine Welteroth: “Actually, this weekend ‘Teen Vogue’ kicks off Back to School Saturday, which is a nationwide shopping event with Simon Malls across the country. You can get in on tons of deals and discounts and also there’s going to be a live fashion show, celebrity appearances and editor visits as well. You don’t want to miss out on that, be sure to check out TeenVogue.com and BackToSchoolSaturday.com for more information on what’s going on in your neck of the woods.”
Candace Rose: What are the fall season’s must have beauty products?
Elaine Welteroth: “When it comes to beauty, it’s all about less is more. We’re talking a lot about the no makeup makeup trend that we saw on runways. One way every girl can get in on the trend is a very sheer almost translucent lip balm that has a hint of color. We love the Baby Lips by Maybelline, they’re one of our Teen Vogue reader favorites.
No matter what your personal style is, everyone loves a good scent. Our favorite fall fragrance at the moment is Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream. It’s beautiful, it’s light, it’s fresh and it’s perfect for kicking off the back to school season.”
Candace Rose: What’s the secret to incorporating cool accessories into everyday looks?
Elaine Welteroth: “I think it’s all about picking a staple that you can wear with anything, so a lot of the trends we talked about are sort of loud or fun and funky.
I think a great signature white pair of white sneakers like we talked about is a great way to wear something as much as you possibly can, so it makes it a great investment.
As far as showing off your personal style with accessories, have fun with your backpack. You’re going to wear it every single day, so let it be a reflection of your personality and your style.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Elaine Welteroth: “Just to make sure you check out BackToSchoolSaturday.com because that’s where you’ll find all the information on deals and discounts on all of this amazing merchandise and clothing and beauty products that we talked about today.”
