Believe it or not, Christmas will be here before you know it! As of today, we only have 66 days until the big day and now is the time to start prepping your home. Lifestyle expert Brooke Peterson joined me this week to chat about decorating your home for the holidays – from the mantel to the dinner table, Christmas tree and everything in between!
Candace Rose: As hard as it is to believe, the holidays are just two months away. What’s the secret to decorating this season?
Brooke Peterson: “I think the secret is really about prep. If you give yourself enough time to prep, you are going to be able to decorate your home the way you want. If you don’t give yourself enough time to prep you’re going to be stuck having to make do with what you find. I’ve partnered up with Sam’s Club this holiday season because I love the idea of one stop shopping. You can get all of your food, all of your decor, all of your gifts – everything that you need in one place.”
Candace Rose: Can you tell us about your Holiday Prep School?
Brooke Peterson: “One of the things that I think is really fun as a DIY expert is showing everybody that it’s not that hard to take the things that you see on the shelves and turn them into some really amazing things around your house.
My new favorite thing this season is mesh ribbon. It’s so cool, you can do so many things with it. What I’m doing this year, is I’m going to do custom chargers for all of my dinner parties out of different colors of mesh ribbon. I’m going to stay in the silvers, and the whites, and the golds, and the greens because I’m going to do a slick modern vibe this season. I made this charger (as seen in image below and in video above), it’s very simple, just a bunch of loop knots; and I took a green ornament, wrote my guest’s name on it.
I used the same mesh ribbon and the same knots and just loosened them up a little bit, and dropped some LED candles in there and it gives us this chandelier. As you can see, everything starts to talk to each other. It’s like a little party within a party.
And then last but not least I’m taking all my Christmas lights inside this year. I’m taking every single white light that I have, wrapping them up super tight and dropping them into these big glass containers. It gives you this really modern, really bright lit effect which I love. But the key to all of this is really two things- it’s about giving yourself the opportunity to do it, which you won’t have if you do it last minute; and the other thing is logging onto MsBrookePeterson.com and I will teach you how to do all this! And I say, if I can’t teach it to a third grader, I won’t try and teach it to you. It’s really, really, really simple, but none of this stuff you’re going to want to do last minute, so I would encourage you to start prepping now.”
Candace Rose: How fun! What’s the secret to creating a beautiful mantel?
Brooke Peterson: Creating a beautiful mantel is the same as creating a beautiful table; it’s really about layering and playing with levels. There’s three things (the three L’s) to keep in mind when you decorate this holiday season, or when you decorate at all, or when you do food, or when you do a party:
- It’s about layering
- and picking one look
You pick one look and you stick with it; you layer things on top of each other, and then you also put things at different levels. It’s one of the main reasons I love this three tiered appetizer tray that they have at Sam’s Club. It automatically lets somebody who is just starting out get levels on their table. When you see a table and you think ‘why doesn’t my table look like that’? I guarantee you it’s either because you’ve picked too many looks, you haven’t put enough levels, or you haven’t put enough layers.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any tips for decorating a festive tree?
Brooke Peterson: “Trees have become really great. Sam’s Club does pre-lit trees, which I think in this day and age to buy a tree that’s not pre-lit means you are studying to be an electrician or you want to have a nervous breakdown! So get the tree that’s pre-lit, and then they have great tree picks there which are ornaments that are on a pick that make it easy to give your tree a three dimensional look. And then the other thing that I think is really great is using decorative ribbon to wrap around because you cover a lot of space that’s harder to cover with individual ornaments, but we’re also going to do a lot of fun things with trees this year on the website, so check in and I’ll show you how to do an entire tree out of mesh ribbon.”
Candace Rose: Many of us will be entertaining guests this season. Do you have any tips to share with us?
Brooke Peterson: “I think that entertaining guests is all about knowing that once a guest walks in the door, you are done. It’s your party, and you shouldn’t be in the kitchen. I would say that pre-prepped appetizers that you don’t have to worry about, that are frozen and you can throw in the oven – even as a chef, those are a great way to go for me. If you’re going to try something new (I like to do this every year) is do a ‘Try It New Party’. So invite some people over that you’re close enough with that if it doesn’t work, you’ll be okay and everybody brings something over that they’re trying new. When you’re having 40 people over for dinner, it is not the time to try out a new recipe.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Brooke Peterson: “I think the biggest thing to remember is that if you get started early you’re going to be happier, you’re going to save money and you’re going to have a better holiday than you’ve ever had before. So everybody always says in December ‘next year in October call me’. Well, this is your call. I’m calling you! Start getting ready.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
Brooke Peterson: “You can go to MsBrookePeterson.com to get all of the DIY stuff you’re going to need this holiday season. To get anything you see here, you can go to SamsClub.com. I will be using a whole bunch of fun stuff from Sam’s Club on my blog this season.
