Like most girls growing up in the ’80s, I was glued to the set every weekend to watch my favorite show “Punky Brewster.” Not only was Soleil Moon Frye’s character highly entertaining but she was a great role model as well. In recent years those of us who are active on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter got to know Soleil in her new role as mom, a role she holds very well. She was recently named Target’s first Mommy Ambassador and joined me for an interview to share her top toys for the holidays, tips for raising well rounded children who give back to those less fortunate and how she feels about her new role as mom guru to her millions of followers!
Soleil On Being Target’s First Mommy Ambassador
Candace Rose Anderson: Can you tell us about your new role as Target’s first Mommy Ambassador?
Soleil Moon Frye: “Oh, I’m so grateful. It’s an incredible opportunity to share with friends through the social community. I truly believe the social community has been my mommy group, so I love it. I get to share through Target and it’s so much fun and what’s better than the fact that I get to play with all these fantastic toys with my little ones? I’m having such a blast!”
Soleil Moon Frye Shares Top Toy Trends
Candace Rose Anderson: That’s wonderful! What are some of the top trends in toys this year?
Soleil Moon Frye: “Oh, we have some fantastic ones. Really for me, I’m trying to encourage creative play, education and that fantastic family quality time together is so important. So these are some of my highlights. My girls are loving the Barbie® Printable Hairtastic. This is so much fun, it’s printable hair extensions. They come with so many cool designs and it’s great because they put it in their Barbies, they put it in their hair, it’s so much fun. My girls are going crazy over this.
And over here we have the Disney My First Princess doll and toddler dress gift set. It’s $34.99, it’s a Target exclusive and the kids can dress up in the little dresses and they have their doll to match, it’s so adorable.
Another trend we’re seeing that people are going crazy for is the LeapFrog LeapPad. This is an absolute must have this year. It really encourages education, there’s fantastic reading games you can get to go with it. It’s really fun. My girls had such a blast- one is 3, one is 6, and they both went crazy for it. So this is amazing, $99, so if there’s that one you’re getting for both kids this year, I would say this is definitely at the top of the list.
Over here we have the classics. I love pulling out the classics. Twister of course is one of my favorites and then you have the new spin on some of our old favorite, so you have Scrabble Flash and Yahtzee Flash which are super fun! Fun for parents and fun with the kids together.
And of course karaoke. Who doesn’t love doing karaoke with their family? So over here we have the Paper Jamz Pro Series Mic, so you can cruise around the house with your little ones dancing and singing.
And another huge trend and pick of the holiday season; this is so cute – they’re the Fijit Friends and they have 150 responses. The kids are going crazy for them. It’s so cute. I love this little friend. I’m just totally into this.”
Candace Rose Anderson: Oh my gosh! This makes me want to be a kid again.
Soleil Moon Frye: “I know, right! And I love that we get to relive our childhood through our children.”
Soleil On Raising Charitable Well Rounded Kids
Candace Rose Anderson: I just think it’s so wonderful you’re very active in charities and are raising your daughters to do so as well. How did you get your kids started in this and what advice do you have for parents?
Soleil Moon Frye: “Oh you know, one of the things that we do in our house that’s so fun is we go through our toys and we really set aside toys that can go to kids that are less fortunate and the girls are a part of the process, so I really believe it’s never too early to encourage your kids to help. We will do food drives where we help the local neighborhood and the kids go and pick out the canned food and then they bring it themselves, and that also really encourages them. Something that I did with Jagger last week, who’s my three year old, was we took a shoebox and what her school was doing is they were bringing these boxes to Mexico to give to an orphanage and it was amazing because we filled it together, she decorated it. She was a part of the process and I really believe that involving your kids in the process. I am so grateful I get to work with an incredible nonprofit J/P HRO. It’s out of Haiti and my girls did a bake sale for them a month ago, so really encourage them to get involved in the process. They loved it because they were baking cookies and cakes and it really has a connection between the charity and the children, so I really believe that it’s never too early to start to encourage them to give back.”
Candace Rose Anderson: That’s amazing.
Soleil Moon Frye: “Yeah, it’s all those little things you do that I think they grow up with, that foundation and understanding and there’s no better time to do it than the holidays.”
On Being A Role Model For Moms Who Grew Up Watching “Punky Brewster”
Candace Rose Anderson: Well, I have one last question. You know, you were such an icon for those of us growing up in the ’80s and ’90s in your role as “Punky Brewster.” What’s it like knowing that these same girls are looking up to you for motherhood advice?
Soleil Moon Frye: “Awe, you’re going to make me cry, that’s so sweet. Really, I just feel so grateful that I get to connect with a community that I really feel like I grew up with, so as a parent going through these adventures of parenthood and motherhood, I really feel so deeply connected to the community and I feel like what you’re doing and what I get to do through Moonfrye, through these sites is we’re able to share and there’s this common thread in parenthood and the adventures and the ups and the downs and knowing that we’re not alone. So I just feel incredibly grateful that people have been so supportive from the time that I was a little girl till now and I love sharing my life with them and I love that they share their life with me; so I just feel incredibly grateful.”

Candace Rose Anderson: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share this morning?
Soleil Moon Frye: “Well, you can definitely check out “Happy Chaos” which is my book that shares lots of parenting adventures and is so much! And also please go to Moonfrye.com and share with me. I love hearing everyone’s advice and tips and I love giving my inspiration. And also through Target; I love to connect! We have Twitter parties and it’s so much fun. So you can like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and we want to hear from you. It’s an incredible opportunity to connect, so I’m very, very grateful.”
Candace Rose Anderson: Well, I’m grateful for you! Thank you so much, Soleil, it’s been a pleasure. Happy Holidays!
Soleil Moon Frye: “Thank you, so much fun!”
