Celebrity Interview: NFL Hall of Fame Cornerback and Cancer Survivor Mike Haynes Talks Prostate Cancer Awareness

According to the American Cancer Society in 2012 “about 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed; about 28,170 men will die of prostate cancer and about one and six men will be diagnosed in his lifetime; family history indicates a higher risk, and African American males have twice as alarming fatalities”. The good news is if detected early, the five year survival rate is an astonishing nearly 100%. NFL Hall of Fame cornerback Mike Haynes knows the statistics all too well, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008 after having his PSA checked at the Hall of Fame, and later visiting his primary doctor. Mike was kind enough to join me for an interview for a second year in a row to talk about early detection, how the National Football League, American Urological Association and the Know Your Stats campaign are doing their part to get men off the couch and into the doctor’s office, and more!

Candace Rose: Can you tell us about the Know Your Stats campaign, and the meaning behind this important message?

Mike Haynes: “The Know Your Stats campaign is an awareness campaign, and the whole idea is to increase awareness about this disease. One in six men will be diagnosed with Prostate cancer in their lifetime, and when you compare that to one in eight women that will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, there’s so much information out there about breast cancer. Everybody knows what to be looking for, but when it comes to prostate cancer- and more men are going to get prostate cancer, no one seems to know anything about it. I talk to men all the time, they have no idea what the prostate gland does, where it is, how many men are going to get the disease. They don’t know anything. And as a consequence, they aren’t looking for it. They’re not looking for different things that they need to know. They don’t know if they’re at risk. This campaign is really designed to change all that. It’s a partnership between the NFL and the American Urological Association Foundation, and we offer free screenings to retired players (that’s part of it); but the most important thing that we do is we educate these gentlemen, and they get out in their communities and they try to help other guys get educated about the disease.

So far it’s in our fourth year. We’ve got a lot of cool new things this year, such as the NFL auction where people can go and get in the bid process to get some cool memorabilia or get involved in cool experiences. I’m actually asking fans to write us and shoot us an email, let us know what would be a cool event that they might have an interest in participating in, that they would actually pay money to have. One guy today talked about going on a roller coaster ride with me! Things like that. We also created the Mike Haynes fund, and that’s basically money that we’re going to use to help local support groups try to get other guys to come talk to men in different communities and try to help them with their fundraising if necessary, and things like that.

The biggest thing that we’re doing that’s different this year is more than 500 hospitals have partnered with us to help us get the word out, and so there will be local events in your town and around the country all this month and throughout the rest of the year on educating men on the importance of early detection. If you catch prostate cancer early when it’s treatable, it’s not going to be a major issue in your life.”

Candace Rose: You mentioned the importance of early detection and catching it early, at what age should men talk with their doctors about prostate health?

Mike Haynes: “The AUA is recommending 40. It used to be considered ‘old man’s disease’; I’d say 40 is pretty young. It’s a man’s disease and the more we can start talking about it, the better chance we have in making a difference in men’s lives in regard to getting it.”

Candace Rose: Should men with a family history of prostate cancer get screened at an earlier age?

Mike Haynes: “40 is the recommended age, but I talk to guys all the time, a lot of guys do start getting screened earlier when it runs in their family or if they’re African American and it runs in their family. But definitely by 40.”

Know Your Stats About Prostate Cancer.

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?

Mike Haynes: “Everything is on the website KnowYourStats.org, and it’s the best resource for prostate cancer, and different questions you might have. This is the one month out of the year where everybody is focused on prostate cancer awareness, but for us it’s all year round. I’m happy to be on your show, Candace and help increase the awareness for this disease. Most men are going to get this disease. A lot of men are going to die with prostate cancer, and they don’t have to die from it and that’s what we’re trying to do to make sure men are not dying from this disease.”

Interview: Beauty Expert, Jenn Falik Shares Beauty Essentials & Bathroom Makeover Tips!

Beauty expert, Jenn Falik joined me yesterday to talk about the must have beauty essentials for your beauty closet, and to share tips on how you can rid yourself of clutter in your medicine cabinet for good!

Beauty expert, Jenn Falik with the must have beauty essentials for your beauty closet!

Candace Rose: What are the latest essentials for summer survival?

Jenn Falik: "Year-round beauty survival- a lot of that starts off with the medicine cabinet and putting your products where you're starting your day. 1/3 of women have more than 20 products in their medicine cabinet which most likely means there's a lot of clutter there, so you want to do a good clean out. It's hot in August, one day when you're not going outside, stay in and clean out your medicine cabinet and refill it with efficient multitasking products.

So for example- Vaseline has their new Total Moisture Lotion, and what's great about this is 59% of women have different lotions for different needs, so you can have two; three; four different lotions in one medicine cabinet. This works well and feels great going on. It's not greasy and it moisturizes on all layers of the skin. You're getting something that works by hydrating, but feels great because it's non-greasy. And you've got one head to toe body lotion that is going to do everything that most women are looking for in a body lotion.

Vaseline Total Moisture Lotion

Another great multitasker to have in that medicine cabinet, especially as we head into August is Dove Clinical Protection. So this is a powerful odor and wetness protector. It's antipersperant and deodorant but it also has skincare benefits. It's going to moisturize; it soothes skin after shaving and it's a gentle dermatologist recommended formula that's shown to be less irritating than the leading prescription antiperspirant and deodorant, so you know that you're getting something that really works, but something that's also gentle on the skin which is really important. It's the only clinical formula that has Dove one quarter moisturizers in there and vitamins E and F.

And the last multitasker, which is sort of an iconic essential in the beauty world for so many different things is the Q-tip®. So for anything from first aid to beauty to pet care to manicures to cleaning around the house, arts and crafts. People use Q-tips® for so many different things and they're great for the medicine cabinet because they're small. They're coming out with an antimicrobial Q-tip®, and that's going to be the perfect thing to be in the medicine cabinet to apply ointment on cuts, and you can have peace of mind knowing that no matter how messy your medicine cabinet may get, this is something that's going to be clean, going to be safe to put on your skin. It's around $3 at the drugstore, so that's a great new innovation from Q-tip® that's going to help streamline your medicine cabinet."

Candace Rose: Do you have any advice for women (like myself) who like to keep so many products in our medicine cabinets? What's a great way to get rid of stuff to keep clutter down?

Jenn Falik: "It's hard to get rid of products- I know, I'm guilty of it too, but you have to be a harsh editor of your own medicine cabinet. So if you haven't used a product in three to six months, I suggest a gentle separation strategy so you can take the products if you haven't used and put it in a bag somewhere or put them in a closet somewhere that's not in your medicine cabinet. For a couple months you'll notice you don't miss them anymore and you'll feel more comfortable getting rid of them so I always think that's a great thing to do.

And something else to do is beware of expiration dates. When you open a new product- I always keep a little thing of white stickers that you can get at an office supply store- keep those next to your products. Put a sticker on, write down the date that you opened it and if you know off the top of your head when it expires; that way when you're going through for a clean out you notice that you shouldn't be using a product anymore and it makes it much easier to get rid of it."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

Jenn Falik: "For more info on everything we talked about today and more beauty and lifestyle tips, you can check out LifeMinute.tv."

According to Gillette “The event used multiple projectors to display video images of Ryan Lochte and Tyson Gay in action on massive screens of particulate water vapor sprayed into the air above the Boston Harbor adjacent to Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art. Powerful underwater pumps 100 feet from the water’s edge created two video projection canvases by spraying a mist of water into the air. One screen of misted water measured 120 feet wide by 55 feet tall. The other screen measured 80 feet wide by 30 feet tall. A patented video mapping technology displayed customized graphics, animations and video footage onto these enormous water screens as the images were projected from some of the brightest, most powerful video projections equipment on the planet.”

Interview: Fall Savvy Survival Essentials for the Whole Family with Morgan Thompson of Redbook Magazine

Morgan Thompson of Redbook magazine joined me yesterday to discuss the top fall survival essentials for the entire family, and the Healthy Essentials coupon booklet!

Redbook magazine Morgan Thompson

Morgan Thompson of Redbook Magazine withe the fall savvy survival essentials for the whole family!

Candace Rose: What can families do to live smarter and healthier this season?

Morgan Thompson: "Well, the end of the summer is a really great time to start thinking about fall, and start thinking about back to school and how you can create great healthy habits for you and your whole family. And Johnson & Johnson helps us with this because they've created the Healthy Essentials coupon booklet. Now this is a booklet that has tons of savings, tons of products; and you can actually save up to $175 worth in this one booklet of great products that you use everyday, and you can create routines that you can start now and continue into the fall.

So we're going to start with the morning ritual, which we all have to do when we wake up in the morning, and that's oral care. Listerine has a great multipurpose rinse called Listerine Total Care, and it fights cavities, it strengthens enamel, it fights plaque over your gum line and it kills those bad breath germs, which we all hate that morning breath! So it's a great multitasking product that we love because it's a time saver. If you're a busy parent on the go and you want to get the kids out of the house, this kind of product is definitely going to save some time."

Candace Rose: What are some great products for the body?

Morgan Thompson: "For the body- it's funny, as summer goes into fall a lot of people don't realize you need to continue to protect your skin, and especially from the harmful rays that could come through even on a cloudy day. I really like to use Neutrogena Moisture Oil Free SPF 15. Now this is lightweight, it's non-greasy. I use it on my face because it has a broad spectrum of coverage of UVA and UVB rays and it has an SPF 15 in it. So it's really great to use.

On your body you want to make sure your skin is hydrated, and we love Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. And this is very similar because it has SPF 15 and protection against UVA and UVB rays, plus it has a natural colloidal oatmeal ingredient which keeps your skin super soft for over 24 hours which is amazing. So you have smooth, soft but healthy skin."

BENGAY Zero Degrees Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen

Aveeno Daily Moisturizer and BENGAY Zero Degrees (discussed below)

And for babies, actually they get dry skin a lot and moms and dads, you want to keep your baby's skin soft, and there's a product from Johnson & Johnson called Baby Creamy Oil. This is a brand new product that is the classic baby oil combined with rich emollients. It comes in cocoa and shea butter or aloe and vitamin E. It's long lasting moisture, it really penetrates through the skin, but moms have really enjoyed this product because it has a sweet but subtle fragrance that smells really good. Moms find that they use it on themselves and the baby, so everyone has baby soft skin which is really nice."

Candace Rose: What about for pain relief?

Morgan Thompson: "For pain relief- if you have kids that have a lot of after school activities or say you're going on a family trip and someone gets hurt – BENGAY has a new product called Zero Degrees and it's really cool because you actually store it in the freezer. Its convenient glide on stick that you apply to your sore muscles and it gives you that instant icy cold pain relief. And it's great if you're a mom on the go, a dad on the go or you can toss it in the cooler or if you're going to soccer practice or a family trip and you have it there convenient for you to use- definitely a must have."

Candace Rose: And how about for contact lens wearers?

Morgan Thompson: "For contact lens wearers- our last must have is ACUVUE Oasys brand contact lenses. Now for those of you that wear contact lenses, you're busy and you don't want to wear contact lenses all day long, and these keep your eyes moist and comfortable. And they're great in tough environments like if say you're sitting in front of a computer screen all day or if you're in a building that has a lot of air conditioning, your eyes can get dry. These lenses will definitely keep them moisturized and you won't have any issues, so I definitely recommend you stocking up on some of the ACUVUE Oasys for this fall."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

And you can download coupons, and get great offers and really save a lot of money for the fall."
