Leeza Gibbons Shares Tips For Caregivers Feeling Overwhelmed and Talks Medical Alert Device

Dementia and Alzheimer’s have been a part of my life since I was about the age of six when my beloved grandfather/best friend (who thought I could do no wrong!) developed the disease. It was at that age, I was forced to grow up and learn that my grandpa was no longer going to remember who I was, and help care for him with my grandmother and my mom.

When he passed away, I hoped and prayed that dementia/Alzheimer’s disease would never affect my family again. Unfortunately, it did, and it robbed my beautiful grandmother of her memory, her ability to cook, garden, sew and complete everyday tasks that we all take for granted little by little. I was her caregiver and while it was one of the toughest jobs I’ve ever had, it was the most rewarding. I would not trade the amount of time I was given with my grandma for anything. I lost her on October 31, 2015 and there is not a day that goes by that I don’t miss her.

There are millions of caregivers in this country, some are caring for their parents or grandparents, while others care for a spouse, an elderly neighbor, or a friend. It takes a special person to be a caregiver, but I truly believe that once you’re a caregiver, you’re always a caregiver, it becomes a part of your DNA. It will bring out the best or the worst in you, especially if you don’t take care of yourself.

Journalist and caregiver advocate Leeza Gibbons joined Candace Rose for an interview to discuss National Caregiver's month, share advice for caregivers feeling overwhelmed. She also discussed Lifeline medical alert devices.

Leeza Gibbons is one of my heroes. As a kid I grew up watching her on Entertainment Tonight, and knew right then that I wanted to be a journalist. A few years ago I learned that she was a caregiver for her beautiful mother who had Alzheimer’s and gained even more respect for her. She is such an inspirational woman with a passion for helping caregivers in any way she can! Leeza is now a caregiver for her beloved father Carlos.

This week I was honored when Leeza Gibbons joined me for an interview in honor of National Caregivers month. Caregiver burnout is something none of us want to face, and that’s why it is so important that caregivers take care of themselves, manage their health and wellbeing before overwhelm sets in. Like you, I was told I needed to take a break, relax and I didn’t do it. Nobody was offering help and I was too afraid to ask, so I just kept on. It took a toll on me. Thankfully, Leeza Gibbons shared some advice for caregivers that will help those in need of respite.

During the interview Leeza Gibbons shared great advice on how caregivers can take care of their loved ones without becoming overwhelmed or feeling guilty, which is very common. She shared tips on how to keep the family together, and how to convince a loved one to get a medical alert device. One of the amazing devices she mentioned during the interview will actually call the paramedics if you (or the person you’re caring for) fall or become unconscious and can’t push the button yourself. Technology is amazing!

Please be sure to watch the video below to see my interview with Ms. Leeza Gibbons in its entirety. She shared a wealth of information that will help caregivers caring for a loved one near and far. For more information please visit: Lifeline.Philips.com.

Dr. Jade Miller, D.D.S. Talks Halloween Candy, How To Protect Kids Teeth From Mouth Monsters!

If there’s one things kids love about Halloween, it’s definitely the endless amount of candy they get at Halloween parties and/or while trick or treating. Who doesn’t love candy? According to Fact Finder, “Each year Americans spend nearly $9 billion on candy, much of it ends up on the teeth of the 41 million trick-or-treating children ages 5-14 across the U.S.” The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) wants to remind parents that when it comes to cavities, not all Halloween treats are created equal.

Renowned dentist Dr. Jade Miller, D.D.S. (and President of the AADP) joined me for an interview to discuss what makes Halloween such a scary holiday for kids teeth, the worst kind of candy to have (my favorite sour candy made this list!),  andtricky treats that are a healthier option. He also shared simple ways to keep the “mouth monsters” (tooth decay) from harming kids teeth this Halloween season, and much more!

Please be sure to watch the video below to see my interview with dentist Dr. Jade Miller and to hear his helpful tips for parents and guardians of children. This was such a great interview, even I learned a lot about my favorite candy, and simple ways I can protect my teeth.

Sophie Uliano How To Make DIY Natural Dog Flea Shampoo and Flea Spray As Seen On Hallmark’s Home & Family Show

My dogs Fred, Lucy, Francesca, and Calvin have had a rough spring and summer thanks to fleas. I’m not sure what caused the outbreak, all I know is that when I took them to the veterinarian I was told that nearly every pet in my rural town has had a tough time with fleas this season. I bought my precious pups flea preventatives and flea treatments, and in all honesty, none have worked well.

When I heard that one of my favorite interviewees, wellness expert, and Hallmark Home & Family member Sophie Uliano was going to be on Home & Family this week making DIY natural flea solutions, I knew I wanted to feature it on the blog and of course try her natural flea shampoo and natural flea spray on my beloved dogs. I haven’t had a chance to make it yet, but I’ve heard it’s amazing! I’m looking forward to whipping up a batch this weekend and trying it on my “fur-babies.”

Happy Independence Day! I hope you and your family are having a very happy, fun and safe 4th of July. One important thing to remember today and throughout the summer is to apply your sunscreen. We all know how the sun can wreak havoc on our skin and raise our risk for skin cancer, so we must do everything we can to prevent damage and to lower our risk for the disease.

Aveeno Active Naturals Protect + Hydrate Broad Spectrum Lotion SPF 50 and the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Love my Aveeno Active Naturals Protect + Hydrate Broad Spectrum Lotion SPF 50 and the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion, RoseCandi garden roses & dahlias, Vagabond round beach towel, and Sunnylife Beach Sounds portable speakers and radio.

As an Aveeno ambassador, I’m fortunate to get to try new skincare products from time to time, but there are two products I rely on during the summer months (and throughout the year!) and those are the Aveeno Active Naturals Protect + Hydrate Broad Spectrum Lotion SPF 50 and the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. You want to protect your skin and keep it hydrated with this fantastic lotion that’s safe enough for sensitive skin.

Aveeno Ambassador I LOVE the fun straw tote bag, Sunnylife Beach Sounds speakers/radio in blue, Vagabond round beach towel Aveeno Active Naturals Protect + Hydrate Broad Spectrum Lotion SPF 50, Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion and trusty Band-Aid waterproof bandaids I was sent a few days ago in time for the 4th of July and summer beach getaway.

Aveeno was kind enough to surprise me with an adorable summer-isnpired straw tote, a fun Sunnylife Australia Beach Sounds speakers/radio in blue, the trendy Vagabond round beach towel I’ve been obsessed with for months, BandAid waterproof bandaids, my trusty Aveeno Active Naturals Protect + Hydrate Broad Spectrum Lotion SPF 50 and the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion on Friday, just in time for the 4th of July! If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter, you may have noticed my posts on the products, and today I thought I’d share a few pictures on the blog as I love them so much. They’re perfect for relaxing on the weekend, beach getaways, and summer vacations – hopefully to Lake Tahoe!

Please be safe in the sun this 4th of July weekend (and this summer!) wear your sunscreen, moisturize, and don’t forget to tag @AveenoUS on Instagram with the hashtag #summerskin. Aveeno is an awesome brand that’s been trusted by families for years (especially mine!) and they love seeing your posts (so do I!). 🙂 For more information on everything Aveeno, please visit their website at Aveeno.com.

PS: This was such a fun 4th of July inspired DIY project my mom and I worked on last night! We used her three tier plant stand as a prop, placed a vintage glass flower frog at the top and stuck small American flags in it. In the second tier we placed white dahlias in old Starbucks Frappuccino bottles and the third tier we used red garden roses in the Starbucks bottles as well. All of the fresh flowers are from our flower farm (if you’re near Sacramento, please come check us out!). I love how this turned out! We’re going to a friend’s 4th of July party today and we’ll take the flowers over to her house in a vintage inspired red and white Coca Cola wooden crate so others can enjoy them as well.
