Christmas Eve was always exciting for my brother and I growing up. We couldn’t wait to open up our packages! My favorites have to be Barbie’s Malibu Townhouse, her 57 Chevy that looked just like my uncle’s and of course her ice cream parlor where I could make real homemade vanilla ice cream. Let’s not forget about the Roller Blades! I loved watching figure skating and thought I could attempt a triple axle. Big mistake! I fell right on my arm on my grandparents driveway. Thankfully I was wearing a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads, so nothing was broken, but I think it was at that point my parents decided they were going to start shopping for clothes instead of toys for Christmas!

It’s no secret that the holidays are one of the most popular times of the year to shop for toys for kids. There are so many fun and amazing toys on the market right now, it can be overwhelming knowing what’s age appropriate and what isn’t. One thing is for sure, it’s very important when buying skateboards, skates, scooters and bicycles to also include a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads to ensure if your child does fall, he or she isn’t seriously injured.

When it comes to shopping for the perfect holiday gift for small children, it’s best to not buy them anything with small parts as young kids like to put things in their mouths (so do pets…as a “dog mom” I had to share). Please be sure to watch the video below for more information on what’s safe for kids and what isn’t this holiday season. DK Publishing’s Editorial Director Nancy Ellwood Shares The Top Books for Kids This Holiday Season!

Travel the world, learn about new cultures and times in history with these titles:

  • The 20th anniversary edition of Children Just Like Me: This very popular books takes young readers on an exciting journey around the world to explore everyday life through the eyes and words of real-life children just like themselves. Unlike other books on the subject, the children who appear in Children Just Like Me use their own words to discuss everyday routines, share stories of friends and family, and compare likes and dislikes, and by doing so reveal to young readers the many ways they are different and the many ways they are the same, no matter where they live. For each copy of Children Just Like Me sold in the United States, DK will donate a new, age-appropriate book to a child in need.
  • American Girl: The Ultimate Visual Guide: this fully illustrated reference book tells the fascinating story of American Girl, from the original idea conceived by educator and entrepreneur Pleasant T. Rowland to the development of its bestselling doll lines including Truly Me™, Girl of the Year™, Bitty Baby™, and the classic historical character line BeForever™. This is the only comprehensive non-fiction guide on the iconic American Girl dolls, filled with never-before-published anecdotes from the American Girl team and insider information about how the dolls are created, from concept to market.

Invent, Investigate and have fun during the holiday break with these hands-on activity books:

  • Maker Lab: Using objects found around the house or in the kitchen, guided step-by-step instructions make it easy to start learning the wonders and whys of science. Produced in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, kids can build, create, invent, and discover 28 awesome experiments and activities. When kids take a hands-on, do-it-yourself approach to learning and play, they gain valuable creativity and innovation skills, and support academic learning in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The emphasis on Maker and STEM education has grown dramatically in the last few years, and Maker Lab is a valuable resource for adapting educators and curious kids alike.
  • Animals of the World Coloring Book features 35 expertly and accurately hand-drawn animals shown in their natural habitats throughout the world with fun facts about each species. From a chameleon to a tiger to a bald eagle, color as creatively as you choose or use the inside-cover photographs of the animals as a reference.

Inquisitive Minds want to know!

  • Super Cool Tech is the latest in the award-winning “How Cool Stuff Works” series, which explores how incredible new technologies are shaping the modern world and its future, from familiar smartwatches and hoverboards to intelligent, driverless cars and towering skyscrapers. Watch Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards List On Today Show Video

Like many of you, when I was a kid I loved fun and interactive toys! This morning on the Today show, Good Housekeeping’s Lori Bergamotto stopped by to share some of the best toys and holiday gift ideas on the Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards list. Did you have a chance to watch? I’ve shared the Today show video below and I’ve also linked up to some of the toys she mentioned during the segment! *** If you have any questions or comments about the segment, the toys featured or the Today show itself, please contact them directly on their website as I am not affiliated with the show. Thank you!

The first 2016 Toy Award List toys Lori Bergamotto of Good Housekeeping magazine shared with Matt Lauer were the under $20 toys. I have to say this Frozen Science toy looks like a lot of fun, especially for kids who love snow. It’s for children ages four and up with adult supervision.

It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been a kid, but I still love fun arts and crafts projects! Have you heard of Craftivity Kits? There are quite a few different ones to choose from and they’re all cost effective. These would be a lot of fun for kids, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents during the holiday season! I found a few different ones on Amazon.

These look like so much fun!

Next on Lori Bergamotto’s Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards List is the Little Artist Super Dough. According to Lori, the dough holds it shape, it doesn’t make a mess nor does it crack. It’s currently unavailable at Amazon, but I did find the caterpillar super dough elsewhere if you’re interested! (PS: The bear and elephant are also available).

The B Boogie Woogie Mat at Target also made the Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards List.

I don’t know about you, but my brother and I used to spend hours playing with his Hot Wheels track back in the day! Brothers and sisters will enjoy playing with the Hot Wheels Criss Cross Crash Trackset this year and into next.

Props In A Box also made the Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards List! I found quite a few different ones at Target. They’re being clearanced out, be sure to grab them while they’re still available!

The Torch My Blazin Dragon interactive toy also made the Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards List! PS: I Found it on sale TODAY only (December 2nd)!

Be sure to watch the video below to see Good Housekeeping’s Lori Bergamotto dish on the the Hexbug Battlebots Arena toy for kids!

Lastly, she shared the Fisher-Price Thomas Sky-High Bridge Jump toy, which was a popular toy on the Good Housekeeping 2016 Toy Awards List! Carson Daly even wanted to take it home 🙂
