I grew up hating my thick, coarse, wavy hair (that tends to frizz). To be completely honest, I loathed it up until recently. All I wanted was hair that was soft, shiny and would move! Let’s just say it all changed in March of 2016, when I was perusing Instagram and someone who has thick hair mentioned that she had used a Drybar hair product that had changed her life. I quickly logged onto Sephora, ordered the Bay Breeze hydrating shots she had mentioned, and decided to try my luck by ordering a new shampoo and hair mask (and I wonder why I’m VIB Rouge! ;)). I’ll be honest, the shots didn’t work for me BUT the shampoo and mask changed my life and improved my self esteem FOREVER!
For the first time in my life, my hair is soft and bouncy. The thing I’m amazed most about is that my hair isn’t as wavy naturally as it was. It’s pretty straight for the most part now. I haven’t tried using any other shampoos and conditioners in the past year and a half, so I can’t tell you if it’s permanent now…just that I LOVE it. This is such a welcomed relief! I can actually go out in public if need be without haven’t to tie my hair up when I haven’t used a heat tool on it to curl or straighten it.
Since I love curling my hair, I airdry it as much as possible. I was tempted to buy this blow dryer from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but it sold out before I could get my hands on it! Oh well, I’ll stick to letting it dry in the great outdoors this summer, while I still can.
Since I’m asked quite a bit how I do my hair, I thought I would list the products I use to calm my thick coarse hair, and my favorite curling wands! I also shared a few images below and detailed which curling wand I used to achieve that particular look.
My Favorite Shampoo and Conditioner To Control My Thick, Long Hair!
Drybar Sake Bomb Nourishing Shampoo. This shampoo has been a game changer. I find it to be very moisturizing!
Drybar Mudslide Nourishing Hair Mask: This is the best conditioner! I only wash my hair about once or twice a week, so this is my form of conditioner. It’s an amazing product. It’s so nourishing, and leaves my hair feeling healthy, and bouncy! Where was this when I was in high school and college?!
Here are a few of my other favorite hair products:
I also love the Drybar Velvet Hammer Hydrating Control Cream to calm my hair down further! It’s an amazing product that is made specifically for those of us with thick, coarse hair. I put this on when my hair is damp. After my hair has air dried I use the Hot Toddy heat protectant. I also use the Chaser Shine Cream after I’ve curled my hair to give it added shine (a little goes a long way). Lastly, during the week, I use the Drybar 100 Proof Treatment Oil as I’m getting ready and putting my makeup on. It makes my hair smell great and just a touch of shine! PS: This is NOT sponsored by Drybar, I am just obsessed with their products!
My Favorite Curling Wands For Thick Long Hair!
T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Curling Wands/Styling Wands: I’m obsessed with this curling wand! I definitely have to have it at the hottest setting to curl my hair. I personally love the largest barrel (the the one and a half inch barrel) as it helps me achieve the long waves I love.
Sultra The Bombshell 1 Inch Curling Wand. I bought this over a year ago and wasn’t impressed when I bought it so I had it sitting in my drawer for about a year. I am not sure why, but I decided to give it another chance, and I’m so glad I did! I learned that by taking smaller pieces, I could achieve the glam waves I had been longing for. I love that this wand is lightweight. It makes styling my thick hair a breeze!
PS: I am obsessed with these Drybar Hold Me Hair Clips. Those of us who have thick hair know how hard it is to find hair clips that will actually stay in our hair! These are the best. There are four in a pack, and they’re bright yellow so you’ll never lose them! 😉 I’ve had them for over a year, they’re very durable and yes, they’ll hold your hair up! 🙂
