It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already upon us! We all know that the early bird catches the worm when shopping early for holiday gifts, but if you’re struggling to find the perfect gift for every member of your household or feeling a little overwhelmed, we’re here to help! Tech journalist Andrea Smith was kind enough to join me for an interview yesterday to dish on her top five hot holiday gifts for every member of your household.
Candace Rose: What are some cool tech gifts for the home?
Andrea Smith: “We’ve partnered with five brands to bring you some great gift ideas starting with two for the home. Televisions are tops on everyone’s wish lists. The Samsung JS9500 SUHD TV brings color and brightness to the next level. Since no one watches TV in the dark, SUHD gives you the brightest picture with the most colors you can get. 4K means twice the resolution of high def and that curved screen just gives you an immersive viewing experience. I like that it’s a Smart TV, so you can really quickly and easily switch between live TV, streaming video and apps.
The other hot gift idea for the home is the Nest Learning Thermostat. This actually learns your behavior and helps keep you comfortable temperature wise. It will adjust itself when you leave the house if you have forgotten to turn down the air. It’s great for saving money and energy. Also, since you can control it remotely from your smartphone, you can crank up the heat on your way home from work. This is the third generation Nest Thermostat – large bright high res screen, you can see the time and temp from across the room. If you’re a handy person, you’re going to be able to install this yourself.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any gift ideas for creative kids?
Andrea Smith: “I do. The littleBits Gizmos & Gadgets Kit. This is what I wish I’d had when my son was little. It is the ultimate invention toolbox. It’s great for getting kids interested in science, electronics and robotics. It comes with all the tools and bits you need to create 12 projects. The pieces are color coded, they snap together with magnets and once you attach a light or a motor it actually brings the Gizmo to life, so you can make really cool things like a rotating night light or a remote controlled car. It’s super fun for kids and parents.”
Candace Rose: How about something that is unique or personal?
Andrea Smith: “Everyone is around the holiday dinner table with their family, and it’s a great time to fill in the missing pieces of your family history. AncestryDNA combines actual DNA results with millions of family trees and billions of historical records from around the world using the latest in genetic science. It will help pinpoint your ethnicity and identify potential relatives. With over one million people already taking this test, you’re going to have a whole pool of possible cousins to invite to the holidays next year.”
Candace Rose: What would be a smart gift for a dad or a do-it-yourselfer?
Andrea Smith: “A do-it-yourselfer or a homeowner – The Seek Compact Device. It turns your smartphone into a powerful thermal imaging camera. That means that you’re going to be able to detect things that your eye can’t normally see like heat and energy. The tiny camera attaches to your iOS or Android device, and then you can see behind the walls like Superman. That’s super important because then you can save money on heating and you’ll know if you’re missing insulation, you’ll know if you’ve got energy escaping out the window that you can fix, that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.”
Candace Rose: Well, thank you so much Andrea. Where can we go for more information?
