When I think back to about 10 years ago, there was a show my friends and I were hooked on and it was called “The Modern Girls Guide to Life” with Jane Buckingham. The show was amazing! I learned so much about life – from dating to cooking to fixing a flat tire to fashion trends and so much more. I was even more excited to learn that Jane had written a book with the same title. I remember stumbling on it at the bookstore and having to have it. I’m certain I read it from cover to cover multiple times!
I was so excited when I was approached to review Jane’s updated and revised second edition of “The Modern Girl’s Guide To Life” a few weeks ago and giddily jumped at the chance to check the book out. It’s just as amazing as the first survival kit/edition. Jane Buckingham shared tips on how to avoid a “textastrophe”, how to land your dream job, how to be an eco princess, the modern girl’s guide to personal finances, when a modern girl should make a major purchase, hair tips, delicious gluten free and vegan recipes, health and fitness tips, interview etiquette and that’s just the beginning. The book is filled with over 400 pages of important information that girls and women of all ages can use. I’m so happy that Jane Buckingham was kind enough to join me for an interview recently where she dished on the “The Modern Girl’s Guide to Life” book and shared some great tips!
Candace Rose: I absolutely LOVED your show “The Modern Girl’s Guide To Life” and bought your book “The Modern Girl’s Guide To Life” when it was released 10 years ago! You recently revised and updated the book. Can you tell us about that?
Jane Buckingham: “That is so nice of you to say! I loved doing the show. I loved Eva and Claudia and jess, the other girls on the show and loved learning something new every week! After 10 years, I realized that there were so many new topics that I hadn’t covered – from what you need to buy organic to sexting! Plus there were topics that I needed to update!”
Candace Rose: How has the book changed over the last 10 years?
Jane Buckingham: “It’s funny because when I first wrote the book people weren’t “googling” everything; so I wanted a place where you could have all of this great info and tips and tricks at your fingertips. Now you can google everything but you never know what the “right” answer is…So I still wanted a book that people can trust and gives you good advice. Plus this time around I reached out to more friends and experts in their field to get their advice — from Candace Nalson who started Sprinkles to Ali Webb who started Dry Bar to Joy Cho who is the most followed person on Pinterest I thought that women would want to hear from other women besides me to get their advice, because these days it’s all about your social network, and I wanted to reach out to women who I really respected to get their best tips and tricks.”
Candace Rose: If you had to offer the modern girl one universal piece of advice, what would it be?
Jane Buckingham: Oh gosh, that’s tough. I think it’s that you have to forgive yourself and not try to be perfect. I wrote Modern Girl not because I’m so perfect or so good at everything but just the OPPOSITE! I wrote it because I needed help, and shortcuts and advice! I think women – especially today — are expected to be smart, strong, successful, and all together all the time. Trust me, NO ONE is all that. So if this book gives you a little extra help and a few little pieces of help you didn’t have before then GREAT!”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Jane Buckingham: “Hm, I think one of my favorite new things in the book would be the advice on Sexting (because you know it will happen), how to take a selfie, the new recipes, and that White Vinegar can clean like 150 things in your house.”
Candace Rose: Where can modern girls everywhere go to buy your book?
Jane Buckingham: “Thank you! Best places would be Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com or Barnes and Noble stores!”
