Fall is such an exciting time in the world of technology, especially this year with the release of the new iPhone 6S! If you’ve kept your older iPhone 5S in good condition (or other smartphone) you can actually get paid for that phone without a hassle! Tech expert Mario Armstrong was kind enough to join me for an interview on Friday to not only dish on where you can make a pretty penny on your older tech device, but he also discussed how we can improve the value of our TV subscriptions, how a small Tile tech gadget can help keep your keys and life in order, what’s new and exciting in the world of texting, a must have iPhone case that will improve the life of your battery, a fabulous Bluetooth speaker that’s indestructible and much more.
Candace Rose: How can we improve the value of our TV subscriptions?
Mario Armstrong: “One of the easiest ways to do this, Candace is to get what’s called a Slingbox. This company has been around for years. I’ve been using Slingbox for quite some time. They have a new product that I really love too, it’s called the Slingbox M2. This is the best way to get the most bang for your buck for your cable subscription or for your satellite TV subscription. If you’re already paying for that, here’s what this does – you basically connect this to your home TV and the internet, and any device that you have you can watch your home television on that device. If you travel, this is great. You can pull it up your smartphone, on your tablet or on a computer. If you’re watching sports games and you can’t watch your favorite local team because you’re out of town and they aren’t playing that game where you are, you can grab your phone, your tablet or your laptop and be able to watch your favorite game. You’re basically logging into your cable or your satellite box and doing exactly what you would do if you were right in front of your TV at home. No monthly fees for this, unlimited free apps for all of your devices with this as well, and it’s a free and easy set up too.”
Candace Rose: What’s new and exciting in texting?
Mario Armstrong: “Texting has been around for a while and you’ve got emojis and some different keyboards, but nothing that’s really changed the game a little bit until now. You have Yahoo Livetext, so now people are livetexing, and what that means to livetext is you download their free app (on Apple and Android), it’s free to use and basically it’s going to combine face to face live video with your text message. While you’re texting you can actually see in video the person’s reaction to your text. You won’t hear what they’re saying, but you can see how they’re reacting to it. It’s a whole new way of communicating, lots of fun and it’s a big step up in texting right now.”
Candace Rose: What do you recommend to enhance our music listening experience?
Mario Armstrong: “Mainly a great speaker. There’s a lot of things you can do to try to enhance your music experience, but overall listening experience on your devices, your phones, your tablets and even your laptops – those speakers are too thin, they can’t handle a lot, they don’t sound great. I’ve always been recommending a great external Bluetooth wireless speaker, my favorite go-to is made by Ultimate Ears, this is the UE Boom 2 (please see video above for details). This is their newest and latest, this is like hot off the press! The UE Boom 2 – multiple colors to fit your personality, but more importantly 25% louder than the previous UE Booms. The UE Boom 2 is also waterproof, you can drop this thing in mud, you can drop it from five feet high on concrete and it will still work. It’s great if you want to have this around the kids. I travel with it all the time, it’s getting bumped and dropped all the time and it sounds amazing. It has 15 hours of battery life as well.”
Candace Rose: Is there a sure-fire way to improve peace of mind when it comes to misplacing everyday items?
Mario Armstrong: “Yes, there is and I have something covered for that because I misplace my keys all the time, so I use something called tile. Tile is a device and an app. It’s a very small device that can hook right to your keys, my wife puts one in her purse, I put one in my kids backpack and I also have one on my keys and in my wallet. Essentially what it is is a tiny Bluetooth tracker and I attach this to anything that you do not want to lose, and then you can make it ring loudly if you’re trying to find it or you can even pull it up on a map as well. Your phone can even find your keys which is really cool about this and your keys can actually find your phone, which is neat. They’re only $25 a piece, so it’s a no-brainer for all that frustration that you would normally have to deal with.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any smart solutions keep our devices running?
Mario Armstrong: “Yes! Another product that I absolutely use and have been using for years now, it’s my go-to. These are hands down the best in portable power and the company is Mophie. Mophie has out the juice pack reserve for the iPhone. It’s basically a highly advanced compact battery case, so you’re getting a case that’s going to protect it but it’s also giving you a boost of power of up to 60% extra battery life for it. It’s ultra thin, it’s lightweight. It comes in a variety of colors like black, white, blue, purple or pink and it’s only $59. It’s a great investment for making sure that you have power when you need it. The worst thing is when you’re looking at your phone and you’re at 10% and you know you can’t get any power from any source, so get a Mophie case and cover yourself on that.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any money-saving ideas for when you want to upgrade your devices?
Mario Armstrong: “Yes, a go-to that I’ve been using for probably the last four holidays for sure is something called Gazelle.com. I use it for two reasons – when you upgrade and get new devices, you might be getting a new Apple TV, you might get a new phone or a new tablet…what do you do with that old one? You can actually sell it to them. They’ll give you a great price, they’ll tell you in advance how much they’ll give you for it based on a few questions you have to answer. They’ll even give you the box, and shipping is handled. You send it to them and then you get the check for those devices. A lot of people are just cleaning up and finding older devices that they can actually sell on Gazelle.com. But then you can also use Gazelle to buy devices from because you can get up to 40% off on certified like-new iPods, iPads, Samsung devices, iPhones and more – up to 40% off. If you really want to get an iPhone 5 or you want to get an iPhone 6, but you don’t want to pay the full price for it but you want to get one that’s discounted but is reputable, you want to go to Gazelle.com.”
Candace Rose: Well, thank you so much as always, Mario. Where can we go for more information on everything you mentioned today?
Mario Armstrong: “You can go right to our website, they have everything listed there at ThunkNews.com/FallTech or if you need an immediate answer from me, you can hit me up at Twitter, I’m @MarioArmstrong.”
