Candace Rose: Do you have any tips for empty nesters?

Tom Kraeutler: “When the kids leave the house/leave the nest, you’ve got all sorts of room that you want to try and figure out what to do with. It’s a good time to declutter and get rid of things you’re really not using and then evaluate what you have and figure out what you want to update or improve. One thing for example that we generally don’t update very often are our mattresses.

Now when you buy a mattress it’s tough because you’ve got to go to a retailer, you’ve got to lie down on it for maybe five or 10 minutes and see if it really feels right to you. You certainly don’t get a chance to stay in the store overnight and see if it’s really going to work, right? You’ve kind of got to make your best judgment and hope it works out. There’s a much better and more intelligent way to buy a mattress today, it’s called BedInABox.com. You order it online and it shows up at your door and it’s fully compressed. It’s a memory foam mattress that then completely unfolds right before your very eyes, and then after it’s unfolded you can actually use it for 120 days so you can really find out that it really, really works for you and you really like it. If you don’t they’ll give you a 100% refund and you can send it back.

They’re going to give you the best sleep ever and it’s guaranteed. They’ve done a lot of research and testing, Candace. This is designed to relieve pressure, and help you control sleep temperature. You’re going to sleep better and wake up fully rested. It’s outperformed leading brands in pressure relief tests. It’s got the highest customer reviews – almost 2,000 Google reviews online that I saw over the last 12 months on this product, and they’re averaging 4.9 out of 5 stars, so it’s a really fantastic innovation in mattresses. The memory foam rebounds faster and it really is comfortable because it eliminates those pain points.”

Candace Rose: Do you have any advice for homeowners with unused space in their homes that is too hot in the summer and too exposed at night?

Tom Kraeutler: “Take a look at your shades. There’s a way to use your shades to lower those temperatures and make them more comfortable. Bali operated shades are powered by Somfy with the myLink app. Basically it takes your shade which you typically had to operate up and down and makes it automated, it’s a motor from Somfy that’s built into it.

With an app called myLink you can set a schedule. Here’s how it works – You simply open the app, you can select the shades (in this case), and then hit the button to open or close them, and then there you go it just does it automatically. When you think about it you can be strategic, you can close all the blinds during the hottest hours of the day and then cut down on those cooling costs or you can open them in the morning and let in the sunlight including those areas that are hard to reach. It all happens very seamlessly right from the app.

Bali is an industry leader in quality and stylish blinds, Somfy are the experts in motorized technology and the myLink app pulls it altogether. If you want to close the shade, it’s just as easy…you just touch the app and down it goes, so it’s a really nice addition. Now, the motorization can either be hardwired or battery powered, so it’s very easy to install and they also integrate with your other home automation systems like Iris or Wink or Connect or Connect 4, and a lot more.”

Candace Rose: How can those with a fair amount of clutter create more space in their homes?

Tom Kraeutler: “I think the best way to do that is to kind of deconstruct what you have. I always find that if I’m going to eliminate clutter in a room, the fastest way for me to do that is to empty the room because you’re going to find things that are there that you really don’t need. You’re going to eliminate those and that’s going to free up your space. You’ll be able to sell it or donate it or just throw it out. While the room is empty it’s a good opportunity to paint the room, giving you a real fresh coating to those walls and the ceilings and then you can put it back together and be more organized. You do the same thing in a closet. Sometimes when you take a closet apart, you might find in the back of the closet there’s mold and mildew that forms because it doesn’t get a lot of ventilation, think about undercutting the closet door to add more air in there or put in a couple of vents in the door and that will help freshen up that space as well.”

Candace Rose: The outdoor living trend is really popular right now but it can be difficult to maintain. How can people make it easier on themselves?

Tom Kraeutler: “Well, if you want to tackle some cleaning projects usually you have to find the buckets, the brushes, the sponges, and all of that. There’s a new tool that can eliminate that, it’s called the Hyde Pivot Pro Water Wand. Basically it loads all that stuff onto the water wand, turns your hose into a cleaning machine. It lets you wet, soap, scrub and rinse just about anything with just one tool. It’s called Pivot Pro because it’s got a patented nozzle and it pivots as you work, so that allows you to stand clear of that stream. You don’t have to bend over, you don’t have to stretch, you don’t have to stoop – you’re not going to hurt your back and then it’s got a soap reservoir that’s onboard that does all of the mixing for you. You simply set the ratio to soap to water, you turn it on or off depending on what you want to do and it does all the work. There’s two versions, there’s one for boat and auto, and there’s one for outdoor cleaning. Each come in a kit with multiple brushes and that’s going to solve those specific cleaning problems.”
Candace Rose: Well, thank you for the great advice, Tom. Where can we go for more information?

Tom Kraeutler: “You can head to our website, Candace, and that’s at MoneyPit.com.”
