Nothing says summer quite like fun backyard parties with the family and friends you love most! We all know how expensive throwing a fun and entertaining outdoor party can be, but if you go the DIY route, it doesn’t have to be. Style Me Pretty founder and entertaining expert, Abby Larson stopped by the Today show this morning to show co-anchors Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Natalie Morales how to DIY the best summer bash you’ve ever thrown.

We all adore the look of outdoor bistro lights, especially strung high on the backyard patio. Abby Larson showed us how to make them using white Christmas lights and ping pong balls. If you love gold glitter as much as I do, you’ll adore the fabulous centerpieces Ms. Larson created using gold glitter, mason jars, floral putty, candles, and a funnel!

One thing we hate about summer evenings are mosquito bites (I had a huge one on my forehead this week that I’d like to forget about) and Abby mentioned that what you need to combat mosquitoes from taking over your party are mason jars filled with citrus fruit (lemon, oranges, etc), a candle (they used fresh grapefruit and rosemary) and to wipe citronella oil on the lid.

Instead of using place cards for her dinner table/tablescape, Abby Larson created place card tins which she made out of beef stew tins, scrapbook paper or wrapping paper. She then filled them with a paper napkin, disposable bamboo flatware, a straw, and she added a pretty little bouquet in a vase as well.

You can’t forget about the kids at your party! Abby Larson created a fab kids space which includes fun boho chic hula hoop hideaway tents made of hula hoops, bed sheets (secured by safety pins); tire ottomans that are covered in rope, and “easy summer no-throw blankets” made of bed sheets or jersey.
