When I was growing up it felt that I was the only one of my friends who had never touched a cigarette. My peers pressured me in high school, at parties in college or clubs downtown, but I never gave in. I guess you can say watching my grandfather struggle to breathe just walking from his spare bedroom to the kitchen due to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) really made an impact on me or that my grandmother threatening my brother and I when we were little to never smoke really had something to do with it too. Whatever the case may be, I had plenty of family who encouraged me as a child to never light a cigarette. Thankfully kids in this generation have the truth campaign to look up to and deter them from ever lighting up.
Believe it or not, but only 8% of teens smoke. While the number is lower than I would have ever anticipated, the truth campaign is doing everything in their power to prevent kids from ever smoking and to quit for good.
Robin Koval, CEO and president of Legacy, which funds and directs the truth campaign stated that “Our Finish It campaign is building momentum to help make this the generation that ends smoking. Workplace bans on smoking have helped bring down the smoking rate in the U.S. among adults and teens, and we want the young people who have the power to influence each others to know that even Big Tobacco companies cannot ignore the deadly and addictive nature of the cigarettes they make and sell.”
Tobacco is the nation’s leading cause of preventable death, and it’s time to finish it for good. This summer the truth campaign is traveling across the United States until September to empower this generation to use their power and creativity to end tobacco use. This summer you will be able to catch the truth campaign connecting with over one million teens and adults at 100s of events including the Vans Warped Tour and the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.
