Have you ever tried a sugar detox? I did quite a few years ago, and it didn’t go so well. I was cranky, irritable and I think I may have been on my hands and knees begging my mother for a piece of chocolate. With that being said, when I heard that the folks at the Today show were going on a 10 day detox, I felt more than a little bad for them, I know how hard it can be, especially if you have a sweet tooth. Well, that was until one of my favorite nutritionists, Joy Bauer joined Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on the Today show to dish on how you can not only survive a sugar detox, but THRIVE!

For breakfast Joy Bauer said you can have scrambled eggs, and fruit since it has natural sugar, but you can’t add any sweetener to your coffee – even stevia since it’s not a natural sugar.

She mentioned that for lunch you can have my favorite turkey sandwich on whole grain bread if it doesn’t have added sugar. For a snack you can have pickles, carrots and some seltzer water – no Italian sodas (yes, I’m scolding myself).

When it comes to snacks, Joy said you can have peanut butter with apples, whole grain popcorn, nuts, seeds, plain Greek yogurt topped with your favorite fruit and berries, hummus with vegetables, or crudites with amazing salsa, and frozen grapes.

For dinner Joy Bauer mentioned that on the 10 day sugar detox you can have steak, fish, sauteed greens, sweet potato, baked potato (my favorite) with sour cream or butter, and for all you wine aficionados – wine is not off the list! Unfortunately no Moscato, dessert wine is off the list.

Joy Bauer also made a no-sugar popsicle recipe with pineapple, sliced strawberries, frozen pitted grapes, unsweetened almond milk. They only have 40 calories, and Hoda Kotb approves.
