Duck Dynasty season 8 premiered on Wednesday, and the show’s stars Jep and Jessica Robertson released their new book “The Good, The Bad, And The Grace of God” on June 23rd. In the book Jep revealed he had been a victim of sexual abuse as a child, and had battled drugs and alcohol. The couple who met in their early 20’s have both faced struggles and challenges but as Jessica mentioned, forgiveness is the key to getting through.
Jep and Jessica Robertson were kind enough to join me for an interview from their home in West Monroe, Louisiana this week to discuss their new book “The Good, The Bad, And The Grace of God”, they also dished on some of their favorite family traditions, they shared advice for their fans, and discussed season eight and nine of “Duck Dynasty”.
Candace Rose: Can you tell us about your new book “The Good, The Bad, And The Grace Of God”?
Jessica Robertson: “Our story is a lot different from the other brothers and we really just wanted to basically share our journey in life and in marriage – the good things that we’ve gone through and also some of the struggles.
I know that on the show we kind of look like we live in a little bubble of happiness and laughter, but we’re just like everybody else, we go through struggles in our lives, and we’ll continue to. But I think the key was always to have forgiveness. We need forgiveness and we need to show forgiveness, and to basically just show love and kindness to each other.”
Candace Rose: What inspired you both to write the book?
Jessica Robertson: “When the publishing company basically heard Jep’s testimony, they decided it was time for them to pursue having a book with us, which we were glad. We were scared at first and we talked about what stories we would allow to be in the books, but we basically just decided to let our guard down, be vulnerable and have to basically relive some of those struggles and feelings and emotions that we were going through, but it was definitely worth it. We really know that it can help a lot of people and that’s exactly why we wrote the book.”
Candace Rose: I read that love letters are very important to you and your family. How did this tradition start and what does it mean to you?
Jep Robertson: “My mom has always wrote letters as long as I can remember. As a kid she would write me and my dad letters. It was just something – I guess when you read something when you’re not expecting it, it just really means a lot.
Me and Jess have wrote each other letters over the years. I’ll make her cards – funny handmade anniversary cards. I made a ribbon with ‘World’s best wife’ and a number one. It’s always been a big part of our lives and brings us closer together.”
Candace Rose: You have fans all over the world who are inspired by your love story and how you both have overcome challenges over the years. What advice do you have for them?
Jep Robertson: “I would just say to keep fighting. I definitely went through some tough stuff. I wrote in the book about abuse and some drug and alcohol problems. In the end, I think getting through it all was having a real close support system with my family and friends that cared way more about my soul than about having a good time. I think surrounding yourself with good people like that is a key factor.”
Candace Rose: What do you hope that readers will take away from the book?
Jessica Robertson: “Really, we just hope that they take away that there is always hope. It doesn’t matter what you’ve been through or what you’ve done or where you come from that there’s always hope and that struggle is just a season and it will pass. It’s a hard road when you’re coming out of something like that, but you can get through it. Like Jep said, to put yourself around people that really lift you up and not tear you down in this world.”
Candace Rose: Season eight of your hit reality TV show “Duck Dynasty” premiered last night. What can fans expect this season?
Jep Robertson: “There is all kinds of funny stuff that happens this season. Sneak peek – I got to work with a falcon which was awesome! I think that was one of my favorite episodes that we did. My brother’s son – my nephew (John Luke) is getting married, so that’s kind of intertwined through the season and us giving him advice and stuff, it’s really funny.”
Candace Rose: This week’s episode was hilarious. The engagement party was funny! How was the newlywed game?
Jessica Robertson: “It was fun. We had a lot of good laughs at that. We actually have played that game several times with the brothers and sisters-in-law. It was good, there’s going to be a lot of good stories coming up. Actually right now we’re already filming for season nine, so there’s more to come – more laughter and maybe a few tears.”
Candace Rose: Congratulations on the new season and your book. Where can we go for more information and to purchase “The Good, The Bad, And The Grace Of God”?
Jessica Robertson: “Our book “The Good, The Bad, And The Grace Of God” is out. It’s at any bookstore that’s out there. If you can’t make it to the bookstore, then you can always order it online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BooksAMillion.com, Walmart.”
