Johnny Depp, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt are just a few of the top male actors in Hollywood that look phenomenal and are over the age of 50. According to celebrity stylist Michael O’Connor “men are paying more attention to the way they look”, he also stated that “seven out of 10 men feel that it is important to look good physically in order to achieve their professional goals and also their personal goals.” Men in general are paying more attention to their skin, style and overall appearance than ever before and it shows.
Yesterday, celebrity stylist, Michael O’Connor and renowned New York City dermatologist, Dr. Cameron Rokhsar were kind enough to join me for an interview to discuss just how men’s style is evolving, some of the non-invasive procedures men are electing to have including a recent FDA approved filler called Radiesse and much more.
Candace Rose: How is the attitude toward male grooming and wardrobe changing?
Michael O’Connor: “The fact is that these days more men are paying more attention to the way they look. As a matter of fact the statistic is that seven out of 10 men feel that it is important to look good physically in order to achieve their professional goals and also their personal goals. We’ve all grown up with the fact that certainly the sun wreaks a tremendous toll on our skin, as does the environment. Overall, also when it comes to age, the age takes a toll on our skin as well and that really is the foundation of really creating a youthful look starting with the skin. Dr. Rokhsar has got some really great little tips to actually maintain that youthful look.”
Dr. Cameron Rokhsar: “As Michael said the sun is one of the main culprits in the aging process because the sun breaks down one of the proteins which would serve as a basement membrane in our skin called collagen and that causes skin laxity as well as wrinkle formation, so certainly the judicious and regular use of sunblock is very much encouraged in patients, but the aging process is multifactorial. There are lots of other things that happen including osteoporosis of the basic bony structures in our skull, as well as fat loss and volume loss with the aging process and skin laxity through years of gravity having its pull in our skin.
Luckily we have lots of things and minimally invasive procedures that men can do. Men generally are very much surgery averse, so these procedures have opened up a whole new world for men to kind of improve their appearance. For the upper half of the face we use neuromodulators (for the forehead lines, frown lines and lines around our eyes called crows feet). For the lower half of the face, for example laugh lines, we use fillers. The filler I like to use for men is Radiesse, which is a very good robust filler. Men also like a more chiseled look around their jawline (a more masculine look) we can achieve that with fillers.
Lastly, men often complain about skin laxity in their neck as well as their jaw lines. Men, as I mentioned earlier are very much surgery averse. They don’t like the idea of face lifts through cutting, so we can offer them minimally invasive ultrasound procedures like Ulthera which uses focused ultrasound to gradually and naturally tighten up the skin in the areas of the neck and the face.”
Candace Rose: What is downtime like with these procedures?
Dr. Cameron Rokhsar: “The downtime is actually very minimal. These are procedures that are meant to be lunchtime type of procedures. Basically patients come into the office, we put a little bit of numbing cream on the face or the areas where we’re injecting for about 15/20 minutes. The injections take less than 10 minutes to do. Often times you go right back to work. You might have very slight swelling or sometimes a little bit of bruising, but nothing that you need to take time off from your social or professional life.”
Candace Rose: What influence is Hollywood having on mens desire to look younger?
Michael O’Connor: “We’re dealing with a whole group of men who are much virile and very much in the news and you would never guess their age. People like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Johnny Depp – all of those celebrities are actually over 50 years years old, and I think they’re having a tremendous effect because they still have that youthful, very sexy appeal. If you compare that to years ago – people like Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra – they didn’t have that same kind of appeal at that age, so Hollywood is definitely making a big impact on that.
Also, Hollywood is making a big impact on fashion and making sure that men are attune to what’s happening in fashion when it comes to simple things like perhaps a cufflink, adding that to your wardrobe because that’s going to give you individuality. Colorful ties, great pocket squares – all of the things that really just create great individuality; great shoes and making sure that they’re always polished and well heeled – certainly those are things that I think are very important. We see that when we see the Hollywood coverage of what celebrities are wearing.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any quick and easy tips for guys on a budget if they want to improve their appearance?
Michael O’Connor: “There are a couple of things that are very, very easy – if you have facial hair, make sure that it’s trimmed, make sure that it is the same color as your hair color or in my case if you have a shaved head, you can pretty much dye it any shade you want. For men who really use their hands a lot, definitely making sure that a good manicure is always part of their regimen because that’s what’s going to make their hands youthful. Of course, taking care of the skin on the back of their hand as well.
Dr. Cameron Rokhsar: “The judicious use of sunblock on the back of the hands is important to prevent skin cancer and also to prevent the aging of the hands. We also have other little tricks for hands as well. We can use fillers in the hands. The FDA for the first time last week approved the use of a filler, Radiesse in the hands. We can use lasers, so for example to remove brown spots to the hands. I should also mention that these minimally invasive cosmetic procedures aren’t really pricey when you consider the longevity of the procedure. The results can last for up to a year, and especially when you compare and contrast the price when it comes to traditional surgery, these procedures are really a fraction of the price of surgery, so certainly it’s really opened up the market as these procedures are very much affordable.”
Candace Rose: Do either of you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Michael O’Connor: “Well, if you want more information on styling tips, people can always join me on my Facebook page which is Michael O’Connor Style.”
Dr. Cameron Rokhsar: “To get more information about the filler we talked about, Radiesse, you can go to Radiesse.com to find a provider or a doctor who can inject that. You can also go to my website which has lots of information on these procedures: CosmeticLaserskinsurgery.com or Dr. Cameron Rokhsar on Facebook.
