Have you ever wondered why the harsh cold winter weather can really wreak havoc on our skin? According to beauty expert, Grace Gold it’s because “we’ve got lower temperatures, lower humidity levels and more wind.” Grace was kind enough to join me for an interview this morning to dish on how we can protect our skin this winter and obtain glowing skin just in time for the holiday season with some of her favorite products from Derma e!
Candace Rose: Why does skin tend to dry out during the cold winter months?
Grace Gold: “Well, there are three things going on – we’ve got lower temperatures, lower humidity levels and more wind. All of that combined really makes it difficult for your skin to retain moisture naturally, so now is the time of year when you really want to change up and put more natural restorative products back into your routine.”
Candace Rose: Should we change our skincare routine during the winter months?
Grace Gold: “Yeah, you want to add more moisturizing ingredients. Also, more natural. You don’t want a lot of fillers in your products this time of year. Your skin just really needs some quenching, really.”
Candace Rose: What do you suggest for moisture?
Grace Gold: “For moisture I suggest – I’ve got this great line here that I wanted to talk about. This is Derma E (please see video above for details), it’s a leading natural line. You may have seen the products at whole foods and they do moisturizing really well in all of their products. Cleansing is very important because if you use the wrong cleanser that’s too strong you can inadvertently really dry out your skin to start with.
You want a cleanser that is sulfate-free. Sulfates have detergents in them and that can really dry out skin, so this is Derma E’s Evenly Radiant Brightening Cleanser, and it is sulfate-free. It’s gentle, but they’ve also enriched it with vitamin C, antioxidants and botanicals which really helps brighten and even out your skin tone and boost the radiance every time you cleanse – so a gentle sulfate-free and also an exfoliator.
You want to exfoliate once to twice a week. That helps to speed up the cell turnover, and you want that for glowing skin all winter long. They’ve got a great microdermabrasion scrub, this is actually an award winning formula. It has dead sea salt in there, which exfoliates as well as volcanic sand, pure lime oil – Candace, I wish you could smell it, it smells amazing….and it really makes me look forward to using it. I use it about once/twice a week on my face, but you can also use scrubs on your elbows, on your knees – these areas get very rough and dry this time of year.”
Candace Rose: How often should someone who has sensitive skin use an exfoliator?
Grace Gold: “Well, for normal skin you can go once or twice a week, like I said. If you have more sensitive skin, you might want to do once a week. You can even skip every other week.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Grace Gold: “Sure. Well, moisturizer is really important this time of year, so you want to look for a replenishing formula with some anti-aging in there because moisturizing and anti-aging really gives you the best results. This is Derma E’s Firming DMAE Moisturizer (please see video above for details), and I really love it – first of all it’s the best selling moisturizer in their whole line, it’s clinically proven to increase hydration, firmness, elasticity, it locks in moisture and really smooths your skin. It has three really cool ingredients DMAE, alpha lipoic acid, and c-ester which is a form of vitamin C. What they all do is help to target those fine lines, those wrinkles, as well as loss of firmness in your skin, so you’re not just getting moisture, but also an anti-aging treatment that I love that it’s been tested and proven as effective as a much more expensive prestige moisturizer that’s three times the price, this one is only $22.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
Grace Gold: “You can find these products at Whole Foods stores or you can also go to Dermae.com.”
