Do you struggle to find healthy, quick, easy and delicious snack choices your kids will enjoy? If so, you’re in luck! Toby Amidor, MS, RD joined me for an interview this week to share healthy snack, meal and drink choices you and your kids will adore, especially for weekends on the go.
Candace Rose: With fall upon us, how can families jumpstart their nutrition?
Toby Amidor: “Well, I’m not only a registered dietitian, I’m also a mom of three. I’m working with these brands today to show families how they can eat healthier.
The first way is with Disney Foodles by Crunch Pak. These really fun snacks, they have cheese and apples and grapes, and my girls threw them in their lunch boxes today. I was happy and I knew they were eating healthy. Disney also has bagged apples by Sage. These bagged apples have Marvel Super Heroes on the packaging or frozen characters, and so they’re really fun for kids. You can even make a really quick and easy apple turnover, so apple with maple and cinnamon, and then you put it in a pita pocket with cream cheese.
The third thing I wanted to share with you is Bolthouse Farms Kids Fruit Tubes. These are real fruit puree blends and they’re not made with any kind of artificial ingredients or high fructose corn syrup. You can throw them inside the freezer and they’ll stay cold in your child’s lunch box all day long. You can find them inside your produce aisle at your local market. Bolthouse Farms also makes smoothies and they make Veggie Snackers.”
Candace Rose: Are the smoothies a healthy drink alternative for kids?
Toby Amidor: “The smoothies are definitely a snack that they can have, but with drinks a lot of kids and adults are drinking too much sugar. They’re also not getting their eight to 10 cups of water everyday, so SodaStream Play has a home carbonation system where you’re going to add the fizz back into your water. If you want a little flavor, that’s not a problem. They have sparkling natural flavors. Again, there’s no artificial ingredients, there’s no high fructose corn syrup, and if you do want a little bit of sweetness, they do have a line made with all natural stevia.”
Candace Rose: What is blendability?
Toby Amidor: “Blendability is a really fun trick that I use, and that’s when you take finely chopped mushrooms and finely ground meat in a 50/50 blend, and then you make a delicious hamburger; you can use it when making lasagna or tacos or chili, anything that uses ground meat. You’re increasing the portion and you’re adding that umami delicious flavor from mushrooms. You’re adding all the nutrition that you get from mushrooms, but you’re also cutting down on calories and you’re cutting down on sodium.”
Candace Rose: What are some additional healthy choices that we can make?
Toby Amidor: “Some other healthy choices that you can make at your grocery store is – I love Greek yogurt, so you can always choose Greek yogurt to take with you in your bag to give to your kids.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
