When I was a kid, my parents, brother and I would pack up our Honda Prelude and head up to Lake Tahoe for our annual summer road trip. We would go the celebrity golf tournament, check out Emerald Bay, shop and just take in the fresh mountain air. It was my favorite time of the year, and to this day, I still hold fond memories of our time together.
There’s nothing quite like a summer road trip with the family, right? If you’re looking to take a fun summer road trip this weekend with your family or some time this summer, you’re in luck! Tech/travel expert Scott Steinberg joined me recently to dish on the secret to planning the perfect summer road trip with family and friends this summer and why it’s so important you plan ahead!
Candace Rose: Why are road trips such a popular family activity?
Scott Steinberg: “Well, as you might imagine, they’re fun, they’re affordable, great way to spend times with friends and family, plus you can see new spaces that are near to you. One thing you want to keep in mind, you want to be prepared before you hit the road, so I thought we’d take a look at some great ways to do so today.”
Candace Rose: What are some ways that we can prepare for a road trip?
Scott Steinberg: “Well, one to start off with would be to think about keeping your car in tiptop shape. You don’t want to worry about maintenance and often times we get a little busy, we don’t think about it as something we put to the top of the list. It’s important before you get stuck on the side of the road.
One of the things I’ve found is that Sears Auto Center makes a great option here, they have 700 locations. It’s pretty convenient, they’ve also got service experts, body experts on hand, these DieHard battery products to keep you charged up wherever you travel. Actually, through July 26th they’ve got this great deal – $14.99 for an oil change and tire rotation.
Another thing I’d say is in addition to making the inside of your car is covered, probably you want to make sure the exterior of your car is covered as well. Apparently, technology has filtered down to the automotive world as well, so Turtle Wax has this new Jet Black product line that’s really cool. It can restore your car’s finish to its deepest level of black and give it that new car feel. The Endura-shine tire and trim coatings are just a few options. They also have UV protections so they keep your car’s coloring from fading. There’s a mail-in rebate for $7 off to get through the end of October, so another great option to check out.”
Candace Rose: Are there any new apps and gadgets that can help us out on the road?
Scott Steinberg: “Well, a good gadget would be the Delphi Connect. This you just plug into your car, you synch up with the mobile app and basically you can get vehicle diagnostic reports. Like I was saying, taking care of the vehicle wherever you choose to go, you can get those alerts and make sure your car’s functioning at peak performance. And on top of it, families are going to dig that basically this can function as a portable wifi hotspot as well. So up to five devices can connect to it, get high speed internet access right from in the vehicle – it could be laptops, it could be tablets, whatever! It’s a good way to stay entertained while on the road and productive as well.”
Candace Rose: Are there any other must haves that we need to know about?
Scott Steinberg: “Well, there certainly are waterproof cameras by Nikon and Olympus and other manufacturers that can help you get some great shots and make unique memories.
GPS devices by Garmin and others, a great way to make sure you can get out and explore, you don’t have to worry about getting lost.
All sorts of cool apps out there as well, you can try Hipmunk or Kayak that will let you compare hotel prices, flight prices from dozens of sites in one fell swoop in just seconds. Tons of great options!”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Scott Steinberg: “Well, I would definitely take along a lot of chargers, a lot of adaptors and extra memory cards if you’re going to be taking a lot of photos. Have fun, don’t be afraid to get lost and do some research upfront, there’s all sorts of great tech that’s super affordable and can help you have great fun on a budget.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
Scott Steinberg: “TechSavvyMag.com is our website, you can find it all there.”
