2014 has been exciting in the world of technology! It seems as though every time you turn around there’s another great new tech gadget or device making headlines, it can be hard to decipher which one to purchase and which one to pass up on. If you’re in the market for a few new tech must haves this summer, but aren’t sure which one(s) to choose from, you’re in luck. Renowned tech expert, Katie Linendoll joined me for an interview recently to dish on the top six tech gadgets for the home, family, fitness, smartphones and travel for summer 2014!
Candace Rose: What are some of your favorite tech products this summer?
Katie Linendoll: “Let’s talk about some great summer gadgets and specifically I want to start with the world of the smart home. This one is pretty amazing. This is only $199, this is Piper (please see video above for details). And I say the price point right off the bat because here we were five/10 years ago, and to get a home security system or automation system it costs tens of thousands of dollars – big companies coming in, lots of wires everywhere. Now Piper can actually interact and monitor your home whether you’re away on vacation or whether you’re just at work, you customize this gadget entirely. You can receive alerts when you want them, you can actually even get short clips if movement is detected in your home. There’s even the option to have things like two way audio if you have a pet. So if you’re at work and the pets lonely, you can actually chat with them. So, Piper $199, kind of awesome. There’s no installation, no service contracts, no monthly fees.”
Candace Rose: What are kids loving this summer?
Katie Linendoll: “Kids are loving what I’m loving because I haven’t grown up….so I don’t need to convince you in the world of Lego. I love Lego, love the Lego movie. I saw it twice. From the Lego movie there’s this character throughout the whole film that tries to build this spaceship. Now kids can actually watch the film and build the spaceship too. This is Benny’s Spaceship (please see video for details) and it’s super neat. It has 940 pieces – the cockpit opens to controls, lasers, missiles, hidden space cannons, and there are four exclusive minifigs that come with the set. It’s a rare collectible as well. It’s only $99.99, it’ll be hours of entertainment with nearly 1,000 pieces. It’s super fun for any Lego fan.”
Candace Rose: What’s new in wearable tech?
Katie Linendoll: “There’s always something new in wearable tech. I’ve got to tell you, I love testing new gadgets, especially when they’re fitness gadgets because I’m always looking for the latest and greatest. This little sleek stylish guy is brand new from LG, it’s called the Lifeband Touch fitness tracker (please see video above for details) and what’s neat about it is it has all the different features you would want from a fitness tracker. 0.9 inch OLED screen, it synchs with Android or IOS app, it actually measures your steps, your workout speed, your distance, your time. You can get call in text notifications from it and the big one for me was the differentiator. It actually knows the difference between whether you’re climbing or whether you’re running. It’s very precise in terms of taking your measurements. Keeping you honest about working out, this is again new from LG. It is Lifeband Touch Fitness Tracker.”
Candace Rose: What new features should we be looking for in a phone?
Katie Linendoll: “Smartphones – obviously I’m not telling you anything you don’t know – your most important device, the one we have on us 24/7. The big thing for me is smartphones can be incredibly expensive, right? This is awesome because there’s a brand ZTE that is creating really high end smartphones without the compromise. This one here (please see video above for details) Grand S Pro is getting great reviews on tech sites online and it’s only $99.00 on contract, which I think is a steal. Unparalleled gaming and entertainment experience, super fast processor, Dolby digital surround sound, that’s the stuff you hear in the movies, so if you are streaming clips, it’s going to look and sound fantastic. 13 megapixel camera and again, no compromises at a $99 price point from ZTE.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any other suggestions for versatility on the go and at home?
Katie Linendoll: “Yes, and versatility while you’re traveling this summer or just at the gym or just on vacation – check this out, this is probably something you haven’t seen before, I like this little gadget, this is from Whirlpool Water, it’s called the Every Drop. It’s a water filtration system. It kind of puts a spin on water filtration because it’s portable. You can take this with you anywhere (as I noted) and it purifies a gallon of water in just two minutes. It’s five times faster than the leading brand. One little filtration disk will be comparative to 450 plastic bottles. Talk about speed and convenience and portability, love me some Every Drop filter for only $19.99. And last but not least, this is HomeAway. For those of you looking for a great vacation rental…instead of squeezing the whole family into a tiny hotel room, Homeaway.com or the free Home Away app actually has over a million listings in 190 countries. Every single listing for homes out there have an interactive calendar of availability, up to 24 photos, property reviews. I have to say, it’s one of Forbes most trusted companies. So if you want an entire place to yourself instead of a hotel room, worth checking out HomeAway.com.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
