The last month or so has been pretty busy for me, so busy that I completely forgot about March Madness/the NCAA tournament until after it started. I didn’t have anyone to root for, I was dumbfounded to say the least as to who would be “my team” for the tourney. A few weeks ago while working on a project, I happened to turn on the ‘Nightly News with Brian Williams’ and was instantly intrigued. He was profiling an MSU basketball player by the name of Adreian Payne who became best friends with an adorable little girl by the name of Lacey Holsworth who was battling cancer. By looking at her you would never have thought she was sick, she was as beautiful as can be, had the biggest smile on her face and was so “happy go lucky”. The clip was such an inspiration that I immediately decided then and there I would root for the Spartans. I instantly became a fan of Adreian Payne on Facebook. I prayed for his “little sister” who I had hoped would beat cancer. Unfortunately Princess Lacey didn’t, she passed away on April 9th.
Coach Tom Izzo spoke to students at MSU, and told them how little Lacey with the big heart lived life to the fullest and experienced things most of us never will. She never gave up and fought until the end. According to Tom, the family told him that she died with a smile on her face after she had told her dad three days prior that she was tired and wanted to go home. Coach Izzo broke down and pointed to the sky.
God bless Lacey Holsworth who captured our hearts and inspired a nation. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, to Adreian Payne, Tom Izzo and the MSU Spartan student body and basketball team. May you rest in peace, Lacey.
