Happy first day of spring! As hard as it is to believe, there are many people across the country still experiencing cold and freezing temps, and as much as we hate bundling up and would love to spring for warm weather clothes…it’s also important to take a look at our skin. According to renowned New York City dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner the cold windy weather in addition to low humidity “wreaks havoc on our skin.” If fine lines and wrinkles have you down this cold spring, Dr. Zeichner aka Dr. Z and beauty expert, Rebekah George have three must have products from Aveeno, Neutrogena and ROC that will combat the signs of aging and keep your skin moisturized this season.
Candace Rose: Dr. Z, what are some of the effects the harsh weather has left us with?
Dr. Joshua Zeichner: “We’re not quite out of the winter yet, and I have a lot of patients coming in to see me that are complaining of dry cracked skin, and they’re getting that because of what’s going on outside. The weather is cold, it’s windy and there’s low humidity. All of that wreak havoc on the skin. As we prepare for to move into spring, there really are three tips that I give my patients:
1) We want to concentrate on moisturizing.
2) We want to think about sun protection.
3) We want to think about anti-aging and reversing the signs of aging.
So let’s start with moisturizers. The best moisturizers are the ones that you are actually using. With that being said, there are some ingredients that have really good scientific data behind them. Something like colloidal oatmeal has been shown to hydrate the skin and protect it, white petrolatum is a great occlusive which means it protects the skin from losing moisture.
When you think about your skin, if you’re really dry you may want to use a product that is an ointment rather than a cream vehicle.”
Rebekah George: “I really agree, and especially as we shed the layers as we move into spring, we want to look for that ointment. I really like Aveeno’s Skin Relief Healing Ointment because it’s great for helping to soothe extremely dry and irritated skin. Since we’re showing more skin, that also means we need to think about sunscreen.”
Dr. Joshua Zeichner: “The sun shines 365 days out of the year and you can get a burn in the winter just as you can in the summertime. There’s a big body of data showing that even low levels of UV light add up over long periods of time and can significantly influence the skin, so I tell my patients to use a sunscreen daily. And I want them to use a product that has a high level of broad spectrum protection. So that means protection against both UVB and UVA rays.”
Rebekah George: “Now you also want something so convenient to use, that’s why I really like the Neutrogena Stick Sunscreens. They’re no mess, they’re easy to use, they glide on so easily and they’re also great for getting those hard to reach areas like the backs of your knees. I really like the UltraSheer stick sunscreen with an SPF of 70 because it contains Dry-Touch technology – that means that it absorbs excess oil, it also is non-greasy. I love the beach, and when I’m at the beach…I always rely on Beach Defense sunscreen SPF 50 which is great when you’re on the go. Since we’re out in the sun more, we really have to get serious about anti-aging.”
Dr. Joshua Zeichner: “No matter what we do our skin ages. Now, if we don’t protect ourselves and we go out into the sun, the skin is going to age more than it would otherwise. Regardless, there are a lot of anti-aging products and one ingredient that has been really well studied is retinol. Retinol has been shown to increase collagen production and to decrease fine lines and wrinkles.”
Rebekah George: “Here’s a great anti aging product from ROC Retinol Correxxion Max Wrinkle Resurfacing System. It contains the retinol like Dr. Z was talking about. It’s a two step system, so the first step is their anti-wrinkle treatment. That contains the ROC retinol to help fade those fine lines. The second step is their retexturing serum, which helps to boost your glow. So together they work really well to give you that great skin we all want.”
Candace Rose: Do either of you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?
Dr. Joshua Zeichner: “The most important thing besides these tips is to take a look at your own skin. Take a look at your family members skin, and if there are any new or changing spots…you want to make sure that your dermatologist takes a look at that- so go make an appointment. You want to make sure and get annual total body skin examinations so that your dermatologist can look at you head to toe and tell you if there’s anything worrisome.”
Rebekah George: “All of these products are available at drug and mass retailers so it makes it really easy to find them.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
Dr. Joshua Zeichner: “For more information, I send patients to the website American Academy of Dermatology, which is AAD.org.”
