Registered dietitian, nutritionist and “The Skinny Jeans Diet” author, Lyssa Weiss joined me for an interview recently to discuss how to avoid making poor food choices, why now is the perfect time to think about eating healthier, how to add vitamins and supplements into your diet and Lyssa’s delicious and quite easy Provencal rice salad recipe.
Candace Rose: With spring officially upon us, why is now the perfect time to think about eating healthier and better?
Lyssa Weiss: “Candace, there actually is no better time because March is National Nutrition Month and spring is around the corner. It’s a great time to think about doing a spring diet tuneup. I brought some ideas with me today to help you do just that.
So let’s start with breakfast! A lot of us skip breakfast, and that’s a huge mistake because when people skip breakfast they almost always end up making up for those calories during the day and making more poor food choices as the day goes on, so you really do not want to skip breakfast. I understand that we want something that’s quick and easy, and that’s why I am loving these crunchy belVita biscuits. I love to pair them with OIKOS Dannon Greek nonfat yogurt, that’s because the yogurt has a ton of protein and the biscuits have this nutritious sustained energy. And the two together are a perfect pairing in the morning. You put it with a piece of fruit and it really helps you get the most out of your morning and fuel you for the rest of the day. Candace Rose: Are there any other staples that you recommend keeping on hand?
Lyssa Weiss: “I love keeping in my pantry this Minute ready to serve rice. And that’s because a lot of people think I need to give up the entire food group of carbs in order to watch my weight and eat healthier, and that’s really just not true. In fact, when we give up a certain food group, our craving for that food actually increases tenfold, so what you really want to do is just be carb smart and look for individual portion sizes of things. This rice comes in two individual single serve cups, it’s ready in 60 seconds, it’s portable so you can eat this at your desk as a snack. I like to use this at dinnertime also, it actually is one of my favorite recipes for my family which is this Provencal rice salad, and all I did was use ready to use rice and I mixed it with some lean protein and vegetables. I have a dish that my whole family can enjoy, and it has everything in there that I want them to eat. This is a great pantry staple, it’s quick, it’s easy and it’s portioned controlled for your carbs.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any suggestions for adding vitamins or supplements to your diet?
Lyssa Weiss: “I do. We want our families and ourselves to eat a ton of fruits and vegetables, but the reality is that it’s not always happening.
