2014 has gotten off to a very rough start for cold and flu sufferers, and we’re only into the second week of February. And according to renowned pharmacist, Jim Morelli the cold and flu season could get worse and possibly last into April. He was kind enough to join me for an interview recently to discuss how we can prevent getting sick this winter and spring.
Candace Rose: What do we need to know about cold and flu this season?
Jim Morelli: “We’ve got a significant cold and flu season out there right now- we’ve got 40 states where we’ve got widespread flu outbreaks, and we have only 40% of Americans who got the flu vaccination. There still is time to get a flu vaccination by the way, it takes a couple of weeks for the immunity to kick in, but flu season lasts into April- and it’s probably going to get worse in the next couple of weeks as it peaks. I think it’s important that everybody pay attention to keeping their immune system healthy in other ways too.
You want to exercise everyday, if at all possible- 30 minutes of aerobic exercise really help, and get enough sleep. (seven to nine hours would be fantastic), and we want to pay attention to our diets. This time of year it’s a good time to uptake your intake of fruits and vegetables, those are really key to overall health, and I have an easy way that you can do that. Candace Rose: Someone in my area actually just passed away of H1N1, and they were healthy. Is there anything we can do to prevent getting it?
Jim Morelli: “Well, that’s tough…I’m sorry to hear that. First of all, again, the flu shot is key. It’s not completely protective, but it’s about 60-80% protective. To avoid getting sick, also…basic hygiene. You want to make sure you wash your hands more frequently, be conscious of the fact that surfaces can hold onto cold and flu viruses for a couple of days, so we want to not just be cleaning our homes and offices, we want to be disinfecting them…which is why we need some Lysol disinfecting wipes and Lysol disinfecting spray. These will kill 99.9 cold and flu viruses on those surfaces we’re touching everyday- our keyboards, our remotes. The wipes are a nice strong durable wipe, so they’re great for cleaning up messes…but again, hygiene hygiene is a key message, it’s very important.”
Candace Rose: Is there anything else that we can do to prevent the spread of cold and flu?
Jim Morelli: “First of all, don’t go into work if you’re sick- that’s very important so you don’t spread it to your coworkers. And if you start to feel yourself getting sick, the first symptoms of colds and flus are chills, body aches, that type of thing…you want to go ahead and take some Oscillococcinum (just ask the pharmacist for Oscillo). This has been clinically shown to reduce the duration and severity of flu-like symptoms. It will not cause drowsiness, and will not interact with any other drugs and you can use it in children as young as two years old all they way up to someone who is 102.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?
Jim Morelli: “Well, again…I can’t stress enough how healthy habits are really to staying healthy during cold and flu season. There is no cure for the cold, there is no cure for the flu…but if you have healthy habits you’re giving yourself a nice head start on staying one step ahead of it.”
