Candace Rose: How do we get our homes ready for company this holiday season?

Kelly Edwards: “Well, I first want to talk about obviously decorating because that is my all time favorite thing to do, especially around the holidays. I tell everybody that’s into decorating that you certainly need to be equipped with the right tools, and the right things that you need to actually make your life easier.

One of those things that I tell everyone that they need to have on hand when doing holiday decorations is the Command Clear Mini Hooks. These are definitely essential, and I love them because they really can transform your walls and other spaces. For instance, behind me (please see video for details) I made a wreath – super easy – I used eight hooks and I wrapped some boxes. It’s an easy project that anyone can do at home. You hang it with clear hooks and you don’t even see them.

You can hang ornaments, you can hang other festive holiday decorations, you can hang the wreath on the front door, you can do the lights on the outside of the house. What’s perfect is that this actually has a unique stretch release technology. What that means is that it holds things strongly, but it removes them cleanly. Basically, at the end of the season, when you take everything down…it won’t leave behind any damage on your walls or any residue…which is perfect. We all know that when we take down the holiday decorations, it’s the holes that we have to patch. When you use this, you don’t have to do that.”

Candace Rose: Do you have any creative yet simple decorating ideas?

Kelly Edwards: “I tell everybody that when they’re designing for the holidays to really think about the rooms that people gather in, and one of those places obvious with the guests is the kitchen. Everybody loves the kitchen, so I always say focus on a couple of the kitchen elements that you want to update. One thing is, if you’re going to be doing a lot of the holiday cooking, you certainly want to make sure you have a lot of the right tools there as well. One of the things that may need to be replaced is your kitchen faucet. The one I have with me is the MOEN Walden Pull-Out kitchen faucet. It’s great because it looks beautiful in your kitchen, but it’s also the first faucet that is at Home Depot to feature MOEN’s innovative reflex system. What that means is it has a self retracting wand, exceptional range of motion, generous reach and of course secure docking…so that when you pull the faucet out, it comes right back in and it secures itself which is important. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve actually gone to faucets and the faucet is kind of dangling, which isn’t very attractive. So if you’re going to have people over, this might be something that you would want to invest in.

The other thing to think about of course when talking about guests is your overnight guests. One area of your home that you should focus on for the overnight guests is the bathroom. An easy, inexpensive thing to change is your shower curtain rod. This one (please see video for details) is also from MOEN, it is their Tension Curved Shower Rod, it’s perfect because it actually adds five and a half inches of elbow room in your shower. It’s a tension rod, so it literally installs in minutes and it of course doesn’t require any drilling tools or assembly, which is perfect for those people who want to do those DIY projects but don’t want to make them too complicated. I can’t tell you how many times people tell me ‘I’m going to tile my whole bathroom.’ You don’t have to do that, you actually just need to do the simple things for your guests, and one is obviously just changing this out.

Last but not least, I tell everybody as a designer, that the most important thing in your home that you need to do is make sure your lighting looks great. When you have all your friends and family gather for the holidays, you’re going to be using a lot of lighting, and you want to make sure it looks amazing. If you kind of prefer that warm and cozy glow of the incandescent light bulb, there’s actually good news- the classic incandescent isn’t gone, it’s actually just gotten better. GE has their light bulb here (please see video for details), it’s their energy efficient soft white light bulb that actually uses 28% less energy, which means you’re going to save money and in a typical home with 40 light sockets, you can save over $80 a year. If you think about it, your home is going to look amazing and so is your wallet.”

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?

Kelly Edwards: “One last thing of course, which is my personal biased is gifts. I wrote a new book ‘The Design Cookbook: Recipes for a Stylish Home’, it’s a perfect holiday gift, but it’s also important for yourself if you’re thinking of sprucing up your home for the holidays. I have small projects, I have bigger room projects, and of course I have DIY’s for just about anybody. You can get the book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and you can also go to my website: KellyEdwardsInc.com.”
