Earlier this week I had the pleasure of speaking with healthy baking expert and The Butterfly Bakery owner, Brenda Isaac to discuss what inspired her to start her renowned bakery, and what makes her baked treats so special.
Candace Rose: What inspired you to start The Butterfly Bakery?
Brenda Isaac: “When my mother became a diabetic in 1996. When she became a diabetic there really weren’t any sweet goods that tasted good, so I started experimenting. We’re from Brazil, so my mother has this Brazilian sweet tooth and is very difficult to satisfy. I started experimenting in the kitchen, and I started making bakery products that were really good. I slowly got better at it, and she liked them even more. I started to box them out and I would sell them…and that’s how it started. It started out of the true love that I have for my mother and wanting her to have a sweet that would satisfy her.”
Candace Rose: The Butterfly Bakery is a woman-owned business from the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. Why was this recognition so important to you?
Brenda Isaac: “Because there’s not enough women out there. It’s still a mans world in many ways, and as I grew with the bakery and I got more involved in the supermarkets and food service, it was all men. I was pushed back a lot, an awful lot. I had the same qualifications, I had better product, I had more perseverance. I had a lot more energy, and I had a lot more love and passion. I was boycotted a lot. I thought to myself, this is wrong! I’m a woman, I have the better product, I can do more. I can multitask and I want everyone to know that I’m a woman owned business. That certification was important for me to post everywhere on my products, on my labels, on my website; and I let all my chains know. Not only did it open doors, but it was important for them to know that a woman can do the same…if not better in every industry. There should be both…it should be unisex throughout the industries. It was very difficult for me in the beginning. It was a struggle, but I showed them that we could do it! And I did it!!!
I’m a single mother, and it was just compiled that with juggling balls at one time. You can do anything that you put your mind to. I was very happy that we were able to get that certification.”
Candace Rose: Good for you! So what kind of healthy treats have you developed at the bakery?
Brenda Isaac: “We make everything from muffins and delicious cookies, chewy cookies; we make mini cupcakes and decorated cakes and cream cakes and baked sweet good products. They’re delicious, they’re presentable. You can’t tell they’re sugar-free. On the gluten-free side we make mini muffins to mini cupcakes, birthday cakes and sliced cream cakes. There’s a full assortment between all three categories.”
Candace Rose: Everything sounds delicious! Where can we buy your treats?
Brenda Isaac: “We sell nationwide. You can buy them at your local supermarket, and if for some reason they’re not carrying it, you can always go on TheButterflyBakery.com. We have an e-store there and if something that they want that’s not in our e-store, they can always email us with what they’re looking for and send them out to them.”
