Our pets are such an important part of our lives, and for many of us, they’re our children with fur! I can honestly say that mine are. Earlier today I was battling a migraine I couldn’t get rid of but my Yorkie, Francesca had a grooming appointment this afternoon at four…and like most fur moms, my pet-kids come first! Animal expert and advocate, AnnMarie Lucas of Animal Planet knows first hand how important it is to take care of our pets, she has over 10 pets herself and speaks out across the country on animal cruelty. She’s helped raise millions of dollars for animals as part of the ASPCA. AnnMarie was kind enough to join me recently for an interview and shared tips on how we can best care for our pets and pamper them. She also discussed why it’s important we avoid giving our pets rawhide, and what you give them as an alternative.
Candace Rose: Our pets provide us unconditional love no matter what. How can we pamper our pets so they know how much they mean to us?
AnnMarie Lucas: “Any way you can. Definitely by providing them with everything they need. Not only the basics- food, water, shelter, lots of exercise, proper grooming, and veterinary care; but also by providing things for them to interact with. They need lots of stimulation in terms of toys, in terms of exercise, getting out, fresh air.
It’s really about taking care of their mind and their body so that they’re all around healthy. There are ways to do that in the house. Not only providing them with – if you have cats, a scratching post and lots of interactive toys like feather toys…which they love. Dogs need lots of chew toys and hard bones to chew. I don’t recommend rawhide at all because it causes aggression, and a lot of times it gets stuck in their system, which isn’t good for them. As pets are inside more and more now with the weather changing, we want to protect our homes as well from the damage they can cause as well because animals are animals. They’re pets! They run around, they get rambunctious, they play and they scratch. There’s a great new product by 3M called Proven Scratch Protection Film that helps in that area. It’s wonderful! I use it in my home. You can roll it out, you can cut it to size and place it on window sills, window frames, doors, door frames. It’s virtually invisible, so you won’t see it and your pets won’t see it. You can pick it up, reapply it, put it some place else. It’s so easy to use. I highly recommend it for those of us who have pets in our homes that do what comes naturally to them.”
Candace Rose: How else can we protect our pets health and well being?
AnnMarie Lucas: “Definitely make sure that you know where your pets are at all times. Don’t let them wander the neighborhood. If you have cats, please keep them indoors. It’s much safer, they live longer, healthier lives. And if you have dogs, make sure they’re contained in your yard and that they’re not unsupervised. You should never leave a dog in the yard unsupervised. If they’re in your home, make sure you make your home pet friendly. Make sure there aren’t any hard objects or things that they can get into that can harm them. It’s really about thinking and making sure that you provide everything they need because you’re their only defense. Animals rely on you for everything, so it’s really our responsibility to take charge.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
AnnMarie Lucas: “Definitely check out the Scratch Protection Film. Any product that can make your home a happier place where pets and people get along, makes for a much healthier relationship between you and your pets.”
