Are you looking to teach your kids a foreign language, but don’t know where to start? Little Pim founder Julia Pimsleur Levine joined me recently to share why it’s so important that children know a second language, at what age to get your kids started, and how parents can teach their children another language!
Candace Rose: How important is it that children know a second language?
Julia Pimsleur Levine: “Learning a second language is a great brain booster for kids. Not only does it give them a big head start in school, but multiple studies have shown that it improves memory, and it increases their analytic abilities. It’s a really good thing to give them so they can have all these advantages and benefits.”
Candace Rose: At what age do you suggest they learn another language? Is their a best age?
Julia Pimsleur Levine: “Zero to six is the best time to get kids started in a second language. That’s when their brains are like sponges and they can absorb up to three languages without any difficulty or any confusion, and also have a great accent. Once they’re six, eight, 10 and getting older- they can still learn, but that zero to six is sort of the magic window that you don’t want to miss.”
Candace Rose: How should parents go about teaching their children a new language?
Julia Pimsleur Levine: “It’s great to bring language in in a really fun and entertaining way for kids. That’s why with Little Pim we created a video series, we have music, we have flash cards and books. Anything that they’re doing that they love, just bring the foreign language in there.
With my kids, I love to put on the music, dance around, learn the lyrics together and we also like to pick a time that’s our language time. So in my home, it was bath time. Whenever I would give my boys a bath, we would speak French and learn all the names of the bath toys in French. Fun activities like that just make it really natural for them.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Julia Pimsleur Levine: “Well, when parents want to get started there are a lot of resources out there to help them make it really fun and easy. With our books and music and flash cards, they can integrate that into their everyday activities and start seeing kids speaking really fast. That’s what’s amazing about little kids. We also have a lot of tips on our website at LittlePim.com.”
