As important as it is to know the latest fashion trends, it’s also pertinent to know what looks good for your figure. Fashion expert Sydne Summer of the fashion blog Sydne Style, joined me for an interview this week to not only dish on the clothing must haves for spring and summer, but to discuss the five classic staples every woman should have in her wardrobe, the secret to great posture, and much more!
Candace Rose: How can we learn to choose clothes that are actually right for us?
Sydne Summer: “Clothing is really about dressing for your body type. So for a moment, throw out all the trends that you’re learning about and instead focus on what looks good for your figure. I always tell women to invest in five classic staples for their wardrobe:
- A tailored blazer
- A great button down blouse
- A pencil skirt
- A pair of jeans that you just slip on and feel fabulous
- And of course the classic little black dress.
There are so many styles out there, so again do what works for your body type. Once you feel comfortable, then look towards the trends with accessories.
So for spring, floral prints are huge- you can add a floral print pump. The island chic trend is also big, so maybe a palm tree print handbag or a pop of neon, or a colorful statement necklace. And that’s a way to elevate your look for the season, but underneath your clothing still shows off your figure and you’re comfortable.”
Candace Rose: Are there any other must have trends that we need to know about this season?
Sydne Summer: “So a big trend this season and for summer is the nautical trend. It’s really easy to do. Maybe a striped top or a navy blazer. Just think all Americana, very Fourth of July. It works for the office, it works for a date. It’s one of the most accessible looks you can do for the season.”
Candace Rose: How important is scent when accessorizing your wardrobe?
Sydne Summer: “Scent is really important. Some people forget about it, but think about it- when you walk into a room, people see you and then they’ll smell your fragrance. Elle magazine just did a survey, and 96% of their readers said they felt more confident when they were meeting people for the first time or going for a first date when their clothing smelled good.
So don’t just spray perfume everywhere, especially during summer. Instead what I like to do is use Downy Infusions great line of liquid fabric softeners that have a subtle luxurious multilayered scent, and there’s something for every fashionista. I love Honey Flower, but there’s all different options out there and it just makes your clothing smell good, so you’ll look good, you’ll smell good- it’s a head to toe confidence booster.”
Candace Rose: Posture is so important, and it’s terrible to say but I often notice that I’m hunched over during the day! How can posture impact the impression that we make?
Sydne Summer: “Posture makes a huge difference. Most of us are at a computer all day, and we’re slumped over so take a moment, maybe take a little compact and look in the mirror. When you’re slumped over, think is that a woman you want to talk to? Probably not.
So all you do is throw back your shoulders and keep your head up high. It actually helps you get those knots out of your back. You exude confidence and be the person that people want to get to know. When you walk in the door, people notice- ‘Wow, who is that person? She’s very confident. It’s so important and a little trick I like to do, I know it sounds crazy but wear a pair of heels when you’re doing the laundry when you get home at night, or cooking just for 10 minutes because it will force you to stand up straight. And hopefully you can carry that with you for the rest of the week.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Sydne Summer: “Well, one additional tip (as I said) is accessorizing is huge. What I like to do is stick to one statement piece per outfit, and use it to highlight your best feature. So if it’s your eyes, you can do a beautiful earring. If you want to draw attention to your smile, a colorful statement necklace.
It’s all about highlighting what makes you feel good, and then you just balance it out with more simple accessories.
