With summer nearly officially here, are you thinking of taking a fun getaway but aren’t sure of the latest travel trends or top destinations? If so, you’re in luck! Expedia’s Sarah Gavin joined me for an interview live from Disneyland on Friday to discuss the hottest vacation trends at the world’s greatest theme park, dish last minute planning tips for travelers, and much more!
Candace Rose: What are some of the most popular travel trends this summer?
Sarah Gavin: “The big thing is theme parks. I’m here at the absolutely beautiful Disneyland. I’ve got my beautiful castle behind me, I’ve got my ears on. There’s nothing like going to Disney in the summer whether it’s Disneyland or Disney World, we call it the happiest place on earth for a reason and I can tell you both of them just got happier this summer.
If you’re going to Disney World there’s a brand new Fantasyland experience and that’s sort of classic Disney- princesses and Mickey, Dumbo. All of it is expanded, it’s more beautiful than ever and there’s a lot of new stuff going on at Disney World.
And here at Disneyland, there’s so much that’s new in the last year. There’s a new Disney Cars Land at California Adventure, there’s a new princess experience called Fantasy Faire where you get a lot of one on one time with princesses, and there’s a brand new live show called Mickey and the Magical Map that’s just now launching. I got to see it last night and it’s just absolutely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, it’s really extraordinary- it’s Mickey and all of your favorite Disney characters sort of mixing it up with new songs and it’s a really fantastic experience.”
Candace Rose: How fun! Do you have any last minute planning tips for travelers?
Sarah Gavin: “The big trend in last minute is mobile booking. We’ve always thought if you book last minute you pay more, well it turns out now that everybody’s got their smartphones, you can download apps like the Expedia mobile app and you actually pay a lot less. So say you want to get away for this upcoming weekend- just pick up your mobile phone and you can get deals on the Expedia Mobile App up to 60% for tonight or for that next night out. So really an amazing way to look at your calendar and say ‘Hey honey, I think we can get away this weekend and take off and save a bundle of money.”
Candace Rose: Why are vacations so important to our overall well being?
Sarah Gavin: “It’s something that we study a lot. We just released a survey called the Expedia Pleasure Index, and it looked at the role of vacation in our overall happiness, and what we found is across the board it’s one of the most important things you can do.
It’s fantastic for your marriage, people who take vacation regularly report that they are much more connected to their spouse and they feel much happier in their marriage.
It’s super important for the way people feel connected to their family- whether it’s their kids or they vacationed a lot as kids and they feel more connected with their parents and with their siblings.
And even your job! It turns out that people who go on vacation regularly- even if it’s just that weekend getaway- they’re happier in their jobs, they’re more creative when they come back, and you’re more likely to stay at your job. So you can always try to convince your boss ‘the best thing you can do if you want me to stay and be happy and be a productive worker is to tell me to get out of dodge for the weekend.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?
Sarah Gavin: “The really big thing is just always making sure you book your flight and your hotel at the same time. You can save so much money doing that- up to $500 on average. So if you’re at the beach you can turn that $500 back into spa time or a snorkeling trip. Or if you’re coming to a beautiful park like Disneyland or Disney World, that’s real money that you can pocket and end up staying for extra days at the park, which is just that valuable time and you get those extra hours of giggles that you just don’t get anywhere else.”
