On tonight’s episode of Fashion Star (season 2 episode 5), “It Takes Two” the designers/mentees were informed that they would be working in pairs to create a collection. Jessica Simpson informed the designers that “only the pair with the highest sales will be saved from elimination, which means even if you get bought you could still go home.”
Team John (Varvatos) started off with four designers, Nicole (Richie) was left with two, and Jessica (Simpson) had three. Hunter, JesseRay and Garrett of Team Jessica were paired; Nicole’s Johana and Daniel teamed up, and John gave his team the chance to pick whomever they would like to work with and to “not kill each other.” Glamour’s Fashion Development Director Susan Cernek even surprised the designers to give them positive feedback and guide them on their designs.
Cassandra and Brandon Scott of Team John paired up to work on a menswear collection, since Cassandra is the only designer other than Brandon to have had previous experience working in menswear. They decided they’d create a summer suit, but Brandon was shocked when he was informed that Cassandra would be creating the jacket since he is a jacket designer. In the end he was content with the pair of pants he created which Macy’s bought for $50,000.
Amber and Silvia of Team John paired up to work on a women’s collection. They initially planned on creating a collarless blouse and jacket, but decided that the jacket would take away from the blouse, so ultimately Silvia created a beautiful pair of pants to pair with Amber’s blouse.
Team Jessica’s, Hunter, JesseRay and Garrett planned on creating a sweater knit with a woven collar, and a pencil skirt “with a twist”. Hunter knew right away that she wanted a high waisted leather skirt with snaps and exposed zippers.
And last but definitely not least, Daniel and Johana. If you watched last week’s episode, you’ll recall that Daniel was not too happy with Johana. This week was no different, he was still visibly upset about last week’s challenge. They didn’t seem to agree on anything until Nicole Richie told them that they should create a beautiful top and beautiful skirt. The pair agreed with her choice, and in the end it paid off. They created a stunning skirt and top, that the other designers adored. The other teams even adjusted their game plans accordingly after seeing Johana and Daniel’s skirt! It was great to see Johana and Daniel embrace on stage while the pair was being bought.
Every single one of the designers did a phenomenal job this week, they were each bought by either Caprice Willard of Macy’s, Erika De Salvatore of Express or Terron E. Schaeffer of Saks. But as Jessica stated at the beginning of the show, everyone was potentially up for elimination except for the team with the highest amount of sales. When it came down to it, Brandon Scott and Amber Perley, both of Team John were called to the stage to stand next to host, Louise Roe and potentially face elimination. Macy’s Caprice Willard voted for Amber to be eliminated; Saks Terron E. Schaeffer voted for Brandon; and Erika De Salvatore had the difficult task of telling Brandon Scott that he was not this season’s “Fashion Star.”
