You may think that cold and flu season is finally over now that temps. are starting to heat up, flowers are blooming and the days are getting longer; but unfortunately the cold and flu season is still lingering on. If you’re worried about catching a cold (and/or flu) or looking for tips to help you prevent it, you’re in luck. Shape magazine’s Editor-at-Large Bahar Takhtehchian joined me recently to share tips to have you looking and feeling your best this season!
Candace Rose: What can we do to stay healthy and keep from getting sick this cold and flu season?
Bahar Takhtehchian: “Well, you want to practice some commonsense strategies. Basically you want to make sure that you are eating the right types of food, you’re getting enough sleep during the night because that’s going to help boost your immunity and wash your hands several times a day. But you want to find a product that’s not going to leave your skin feeling dry and sensitive, so Cetaphil has this incredibly antibacterial gentle cleansing bar. What’s great is it’s made especially for dry sensitive skin, and it’s a soap-free formula which means it’s not going to dry your skin out in the winter. It doesn’t have that sticky residue and it doesn’t contain some of those harsh detergents that may irritate your skin. Plus you can use this on your face and your body, so it’s not going to clog your pores. It’s convenient, it works well and you can find it at Target and Walmart stores.”
Candace Rose: What can we do if we already feel like we’re catching a cold or flu?
Bahar Takhtehchian: “Well, the minute you feel the cold coming you want to take Cold-EEZE cold remedy. Their lozenges are clinically proven to shorten the duration of a cold by 42%. There’s some interesting science behind this, essentially it’s releasing zinc ions into your mouth that’s getting absorbed by your upper respiratory system, and it’s those zinc ions that are preventing the cold virus from replicating. You can get these in the lozenge form, they’ve also got an oral spray and new quick melts that dissolve in your mouth- there’s a non drowsy daytime version, and there’s a nighttime version that helps you fall asleep.”
Candace Rose: Is there anything else that we can do to stay healthy this cold and flu season?
Bahar Takhtehchian: “As you know when you have a cold you’re blowing your nose all the time, and if you’re not using the right facial tissue you can experience some sensitivity. So try some Puffs Ultra Soft & Strong, it contains Puffs lotions so it’s really soothing. It’s excellent for adults, but it’s really great for kids as well and they have very delicate skin so we recommend it for both. If you check out their Facebook and Twitter feeds you’ll find out some more information on how to stay healthy during this cold and flu season.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us?
Bahar Takhtehchian: “Well, I think everyone should go out and buy the March issue of Shape magazine. As always we have great health, nutrition and fitness tips, and it’s a fabulous resource for women who want to look and feel their best every single day.”
