On tonight’s episode (2) “Sex Sells” of NBC’s Fashion Star (season 2), the designers were given the challenge of creating a sexy piece by mentors Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos and Nicole Richie.
At the beginning of the episode the designers met with their mentees to guide them on this week’s difficult challenge. Each mentor still had four team members except left for Nicole (Richie) who lost designer, Bret Young last week. When asked about her team, she stated “these are three very creative people; this week is definitely the time they can show what they’re all about.”
Jessica Simpson told her group “You want the girl to look hot, but you don’t want it to be too intimidating where women are like ‘I can’t wear that.’ It’s about being sexy but not like a hoochie mama’s walking down the runway. This is selling to America.”
John (Varvatos) had some inspirational words for his team “Here’s the thing with the challenge- You have to dig deep inside and maybe get out of your comfort zone, and you might find out that you have some other things within you that you never thought about.”
When it came to completing the challenge, the mentors were very vocal about what they thought would sell to the buyers and what wouldn’t. John Varvatos was not happy with Contemporary Men’s designer Brandon Scott’s sport coat from the get go. He liked the design, but felt it was the wrong color and the fabric “too heavy.”
Daniel of team Nicole, wowed his mentor once again. The designer who started designing dresses at the age of 15, and made his prom date’s dress (and three of his friends dresses) stated that “this challenge is perfect for me because sexy is my thing.”
Last week’s winner Hunter Bell felt pressure after selling to Saks for $200,000 in episode 1, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell. She brought a stunning dress with piping up to the plate and hit it out of the ballpark once again; this time selling her Mesh Ponte Dress to Express for $75,000.
In episode one, JesseRay and Garrett were up for elimination, but this week it was completely different! They had the biggest win of the night. Their gorgeous Basketknit dress was initially bid on by Saks for $50k; Macy’s bid $60,000 and Express went with $75,000. Terron E. Schaeffer stopped bidding at that point, but a bidding war between between Macy’s and Express continued. In the end the bidding war ended with Caprice Willard of Macy’s victorious!
At the end of the night, it was Tori and David, both from Team Jessica up for elimination, and standing next to Fashion Star host Louise Roe waiting to here their fate. Macy’s voted for David to be eliminated, Saks voted for Tori, and in the end Express voted for Tori to be sent home.
