Can you believe that award show season has finally wrapped? Everyone looked gorgeous on the red carpet this season, that’s for sure. Beauty expert Stacy Cox joined me this week to dish on her favorite looks, must have products and DIY tips to ensure you look fabulous for your next red carpet event!
Candace Rose: Everyone looked GORGEOUS on the red carpet this award show season, who were some of your favorites?
Stacy Cox: “Two of my favorites that stood out for me- number one: Naomi Watts. Do you know why? Because she was consistent from the Golden Globes in her Zac Posen dress; then she goes to SAG awards wearing Marchesa, beautiful strapless dress; and then last Sunday night she just hits it out of the ballpark with her Armani Prive gown. And what you see from Naomi was consistency. Consistency in the gown, in the makeup and in the hair.
The other person from Sunday night, from the Academy awards that I gave an A+ to was Queen Latifah. She was rocking her curves wearing a white Badgley Mischka gown, interestingly enough neither woman had on a necklace or bling. So the hair, the makeup and the dress have to stand on their own merit. They really have to deliver a strong and glamorous message.”
Candace Rose: What were some of the major trends that you saw?
Stacy Cox: “I saw about three or four major trends that we should touch upon right now. One of the most popular that comes off the fashion runways hits the red carpet and can now get into our makeup bags is the red lip. The first thing you want to do to get a red lip is whiten your teeth because it actually amplifies the color. So easy thing to always do when you’re answering emails or getting ready is the 3D Whitestrips. That’ll transform your smile in a jiffy. Then you want to exfoliate your lips with a sugar cube, and when you’re ready to put your red lip color on- I asked Bruce Grayson who does Tom Cruise’s makeup and was backstage at the Grammy’s touching up celebrities, he said tell viewers to go with the CoverGirl LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm’s in either Scarlett Twist or Ruby Twist. They have a mango shea butter infusion, and the reason that’s important because it nourishes your lips but you won’t have that sticky factor where your lips and your hair meet in the middle. That’s like a big fashion/beauty 911 disaster. So the lips are big.”
Candace Rose: I actually tried the CoverGirl LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm yesterday and my lips actually looked and felt bigger. I love this stuff!
Stacy Cox: “See it’s getting a little bit of cult status, I feel like. Jumbo Gloss Balm’s are going to be around for a long time to come.
And I’ve mentioned this to you, Candace, when we’ve talked, and I’ve said this whole red carpet season we were not seeing a lot of glowy dewy complexions. It’s matte, matte, matte. We saw it with Queen Latifah, we saw it with Janelle Monat at the Grammy’s. We saw it everywhere- on Pink, Naomi too. CoverGirl’s come out with this genius product, it’s their Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 foundation. The reason it’s interesting is because it has a primer, a concealer, and a foundation all housed into one bottle. So when you’re going to your red carpet event’s if that’s a wedding, a baby shower, a public speaking engagement and you don’t have time for constant touch ups, that you’ve got to get on your radar.”
Candace Rose: What are some simple ways to recreate these looks at home?
Stacy Cox: “Simple ways- First of all you have to have in your arsenal some velcro rollers. Very old school and inexpensive at the drugstore, but when you want volume in your hair, you’ve got to take your velcro roller, you’ve got to get it up here. You want to prep your hair first because you want to have protection against the heat, but you want to take advantage of it. Pantene just came out with their AgeDefy, it’s their thickening treatment so that’s a good starting point; then you get your curlers in and take your blow dryer, add the heat and that gives you the volume.
When you want to get rid of dark puffy circles- I think I’ve mentioned this to you, you take your baby’s teething rings (wash the drool off of it!) and then you put them in the freezer and put them on your eyes to take away puffiness and dark circles. Then if you want a good eye cream to put on top of your cooled eyes, this is a new one- it’s the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting eye cream and lash serum duo. So the eye cream has amino peptides so you tap that in and it helps hydrate and firm. And then the conditioning and lash serum is a great base for your mascara, and let your eyes do all the talking because eyes are the windows to our souls.”
Candace Rose: What’s the best way to get ready for a big photo op?
Stacy Cox: “Well, number one- I know I sound like a mom but for a photo op you need to get a lot of sleep. You need to switch up your deodorant so that God forbid you don’t have any sweat stains that you didn’t realize you had because you perspire 30% more when you’re excited than normal. So Secret came out with a stress response antiperspirant deodorant that I love. I saw it backstage at a lot of the award shows.
For photos you need to have energy. I was telling people to recycle their mint tins and put walnuts and almonds in 1 oz. mint tins. They’re a perfect size for energy infusion, and you need to practice smiling which I know sounds crazy but you need to stand in front of a mirror and give yourself your best toothy grin. It’s a muscle so practice makes perfect.”
