Candace Rose: Many of us set unrealistic resolutions that we have a really hard time keeping. What are some good practical resolutions and what can we do to ensure we keep them?

Merilee Kern: “It’s interesting- Statistic Brain estimates that 45% of Americans make resolutions but only 8% actually exceed at reaching their goals. And I found that people only tend to make resolutions in three areas: self improvement, weight and finances. And that’s fine, as long as you approach it in a practical way with small achievable goals.

For example, if you really plan to stay in better touch with friends and family this year, start off by making easy just a five or ten minute phone call once a week just to let them know you’re thinking about them. You can stick that resolution by creating a recurring reminder in your smartphone’s calendar or task list just to make sure that commitment doesn’t slip your mind.”


Candace Rose: And we’re all familiar with the traditional weight loss and health resolutions made each year. Do you have any suggestions on how we can take these to the next level?

Merilee Kern: “Definitely. Weight loss incentive programs are a huge trend right now but you can actually create your own incentive program with coworkers, friends, family members. Just have everybody contribute maybe $10 or $20 and winner takes all. Studies show that even small cash rewards can triple the effectiveness of weight loss programs.

Also, whether you spend time indoors or outdoors in the winter it’s a good idea to include UV protection among your health resolutions. UV light is a threat to your skin and your eyes year round, not just during the summer months. In fact 40% of all UV exposure occurs when we’re not even in full sunlight.
