With engagement season officially upon us, Brides magazine’s Michelle Myers joined me recently to discuss the latest wedding trends for 2013- from the top dresses, to the hottest destinations, and how one lucky couple can win the wedding of their dreams!
Candace Rose: Can you tell us about Brides American Wedding Study?
Michelle Myers: “Well, we’re very excited with the American Wedding Study, and we found out all sorts of great information this year. One of the most important facts that we learned is that 1/3 of all engagements happen between Thanksgiving and New Year, so it’s a really exciting time at Brides magazine as we have a whole new crop of brides-to-be on the horizon to help them get started with their wedding planning.”
Candace Rose: And with engagement season upon us, where should brides start when planning for their wedding day?
Michelle Myers: “So I always tell couples they need to begin by setting a budget. It’s really important to set a budget and prioritize. 62% of all couples are either paying for their own wedding or paying significantly contributing to the cost of that big day, so they need to be in agreement on what they want to spend their money- is it the band, the flowers, the venue. And once that budget gets set then they need to quickly set a date and pick a venue, and they’ll be able to pick that venue because they’ll have that budget and they’ll know how many guests they’ll have and what type of wedding that they can afford.
There are a lot of great non traditional venues that can save couples money by doing the wedding at a friend’s house; on a farm; at a lake; on the beach. There are lots of places some couples get married in a park these days- beautiful places to make that day very special.
And then couples do still go with the very traditional catering hall or ballroom. Those need to be booked a little far in advance- some of those book out six to 12 months in advance. You want to get your date set and your venue picked right away.”
Candace Rose: And what’s the secret to picking the perfect wedding dress?
Michelle Myers: “I always tell brides to start in their own closet. See what types of dresses you are already wearing- are they strapless? Are they off the shoulder? Look to that to get inspiration and our friends at David’s Bridal have given us a sneak peek at their 2013 spring collection. It’s the White Collection by Vera Wang that’s available at David’s Bridal stores nationwide and on their website. We have three of my favorite dresses from the collection today (please see video above for details).”
Candace Rose: What are the latest trends in dresses?
Michelle Myers: “So we have a lot of trends to show you this morning, so the first is the ballgown dress. It’s beautiful tumble tulle, but the trend here is ombre, and ombre means the graduation of color. This dresses comes in two colors: pink and stone, and is a big trend in bridal dresses right now for a more fashion forward bride and a bit more daring. This works on all different types of body types, a great dress for brides-to-be.
Another wonderful trend that we’re seeing a ton of brides buying is a short wedding dress. This dress is $728, and again from the White by Vera Wang Collection. A bit more non-traditional but it’s a fun and flirty one-shoulder dress that you can dance the night away in and show off those beautiful legs. We love the short look to the dress.
And my favorite, the style of the dress is called fit and flare, so fitted on top and flares out on the bottom. It shows off your meal and is very romantic. This dress in particular has beautiful lace appliques on it. It’s a gorgeous dress- strapless and we know, and continues to be a big trend for brides are strapless wedding dresses.”
Candace Rose: Are there any other trends that we should know about?
Michelle Myers: “A lot of brides are planning so much of their wedding online and they’re looking for tools that can help them plan their wedding online. With that being said, David’s Bridal, I think is one of the best planning tools out there. It’s called My Event on their website DavidsBridal.com. If you click on My Event you can get help with budgeting process, a task list, a shopping list- it’s a great resource for brides. And for brides that don’t want to pay for their wedding or they don’t want to make any of the decisions, I suggest you enter the Brides Facebook wedding contest. It’s Facebook.com/BridesLiveWedding and one lucky couple will win a free wedding of their dreams. All the elements of the wedding will be chosen by America on Facebook and it will be broadcast live on Facebook on April 7th, at the beautiful St. Regis Hotel in Monarch Beach, California. So one lucky couple wins that; easy to apply, upload some photos on the application. Three more days to register so get out there and register to win for your free wedding.”
