If there’s one thing I have always found difficult and time-consuming, it’s picking a new fragrance. Thankfully the fabulous readers of Self magazine took care of this dilemma for us, they went through all 242 fragrance launches of the past year, and picked their favorites for both men and women. Self magazine’s Beauty Features Editor Kate Sandoval was kind enough to join me this week to dish on some of the 2012 Self Fragrance Award WINNERS!

Candace Rose: Can you tell us about Self’s Fragrance Awards?

Kate Sandoval: “Yes, every year Self magazine has readers test all the fragrances that launched in the past year. This year there were 242 fragrance launches. They smelled them blindly and chose a few of their favorites.”

Candace Rose: Who were some of the winners?

Kate Sandoval: “Our first winner is in the men’s category, it’s Tim McGraw’s Soul2Soul – this won the best spicy cologne. It’s strong, dark, woodsy and it’s basically Tim McGraw in a bottle. It’s $31.50 and available at mass retail stores.

Our second winner is Flora by Gucci Gorgeous Gardenia. This won our best white floral category. It has top notes of pear and berry and basenotes of patchouli and brown sugar. It really smells like a gardenia in full bloom. It’s $100 and available at Macy’s and Saks.

Then our big A-list celebrity fragrance winner is Lady Gaga’s Fame. This is the first ever black eau de parfum. It has this patent pending black to clear technology, so when it goes on, it goes on invisibly. It won’t stain your clothes or your skin. It has belladonna and incense, along with saffron, apricot and honey notes. It’s $79, and available at Macy’s and Sephora.

Then if you’re the ultimate attention getter you’ll love Tom Ford’s Lys Fume. It’s really mysterious and alluring and it’s this exotic take on the classic white lily flower. It also has this rum essence that we couldn’t get enough of. It’s $205 and available at Neiman Marcus, Saks and select Nordstrom stores.

And finally we have Curve Appeal which won our most sexy without even trying award. It really is undeniably sexy and it has this effortlessly cool thing going on. It has forbidden apple, exotic jasmine, warm amber and vanilla notes and it’s $48 at Walmart.

They have a Facebook contest going on called Public Display of Appeal which gives you a chance to win a celeb style trip to Los Angeles. While you’re online you might as well go online to where we have a list of all our fragrance award winners.”
