With Halloween just three days away, family planning expert, mom and Halloween enthusiast Deb Geigis Berry stopped by to share some of her favorite tips for prepping your home for the big day! She also dished on how parents can keep their kids safe while trick or treating, and how you can even get man’s best friend ready for the big day with the help of rock legend Bret Michaels!
Candace Rose: With Halloween right around the corner, what are some last minute ways we can get in the spirit?
Deb Geigis Berry: “Well, it’s really neat to see over the years how the Halloween holiday has grown into a whole season and it’s not just about trick or treating. We start early in October and we’re baking, making decorations and picking out costumes. Simple homemade things can get you in the spirit.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any decor tips you can share with us?
Deb Geigis Berry: “I do. My go-to craft item is Duck brand duct tape. There are 140 different patterns and colors. Some of the new styles for the season are purple spiders, candy corn and glow in the dark. It’s so cool what you can do with duct tape. I made a broom (please see video above for details) which is a great accessory if you’re going out as a witch you can bring this. You can also use duct tape to decorate a Jack-o’-lantern. And once you do so you can submit the photo to StickOrTreat.com for a chance to win $1,000.”
Candace Rose: What can parents do to ensure their kids are safe when trick or treating?
Deb Geigis Berry: “Well, first let’s talk about tooth safety because candy is a huge issue on Halloween and it’s my kids favorite part. October is National Orthodontic Health month. Orthodontists get a lot of calls around Halloween from kids that wear traditional metal braces and have gotten candy stuck in them. So I recommend clear removable braces like Invisalign Teen. For more information visit Invisalign.com/Teen.
I have one more safety tip, and that is making sure when your kids are out trick or treating that they can see where they’re going and they can be scared but they have to be safe. Plastics come really in handy for this. One thing I do is I give my kids lightweight plastic flash lights. I don’t recommend using candles in a Jack-o’-lantern, it’s much better when kids are involved, and fire retardant materials like tea lights. If you need more safety tips you can go to PlasticsMakeItPossible.com.”
Candace Rose: How about our beloved pets, how can we get them involved?
Deb Geigis Berry: “This is Gucci. Meet Gucci, Candace Rose. This is Gucci wearing a Superman costume. This is one of many, many outfits available at PetSmart. It’s a blast. You go in there and you wouldn’t believe all the options they have! They have the rocker outfits from the Bret Michaels Pets Rock Collection; you can decorate your dog like a sock monkey. You can take a photo and submit it to the Monster Cute Photo Contest powered by Greenies. You can do this through the PetSmart Facebook page for a chance to win $10,000.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?
Deb Geigis Berry: “Yes, if you go to VideoPump.tv/YAPP you can get more information. You can also download that app on your mobile device.”
