Interview: New Mom Sanity Savers with NYC Educator Kristen Wiles

Being a mom can be one of the most rewarding yet challenging full-time jobs, especially if you work outside the home. New mom, early-childhood and basic motor skill development instructor and middle school educator (for the NYC DOE) Kristen Wiles joined me recently to talk about some of the challenges new mothers face and share tips on how they can best handle them.

Educator and new mom Kristen Wile shares her favorite tips for new moms.

Candace Rose: What are some of the challenges that mothers face?

Kristen Wiles: “Being a new mom myself, and working with children for most of my life I know that motherhood can be a challenge for anyone. I think it’s really important that the first thing you do is always know what you can handle and what can wait. As a new mom or moms in general we try to do everything that’s thrown at us, and a lot of times we need to manage our time. Knowing what you can handle is important. I think it’s important to plan ahead, and have some meals that you’ve prepared already and you can put them in the freezer and pop them in the oven so you don’t have to have that five course meal planned for your family the night before. I think it’s also important to know what can wait. You have a sink full of dishes or a pile of laundry, those are things that don’t have to be done right this minute. They can definitely wait another day and you can focus on your baby and taking care of yourself.”

Candace Rose: Do you have any suggestions for new moms with babies?

Kristen Wiles: “I do. I think one of the best things you can do is plan ahead and have the right tools on hand- tools that are going to help you as a mom have peace of mind, especially like a video monitor. This is a video monitor from Motorola Baby Monitors. What’s great about this is it has features like a full color screen, two way communication, night vision, lullabies and even temperature readings for the room. It’s really hard to be a new mom and to step away and give that space between you and your baby so you can get other things done or you can rest yourself, this will allow you to know your baby is safe while they’re resting and you can keep an eye on them. I think that’s really important.”

Candace Rose: And how much would a baby monitor like that cost?

Kristen Wiles: “This one’s $249.99, and like I said it’s technologically advanced so it has all these great features and I think it’s definitely worth the investment.”

Candace Rose: How should new moms handle all the advice given to them by others?

Kristen Wiles: “That’s one of the biggest struggles that new moms have is handling advice from other people. You have family and friends, and new moms always want to share what’s worked for them and that’s great, but it can be tricky to handle that advice. I think the best thing you can do is look to your own mom or a mom that you admire, and ask the questions to them and take their advice. I think it’s also really important to know that you can just do things your own way and that you’re not going to know everything the minute you have a child. It doesn’t necessarily come naturally to everyone and you’re not going to know all the answers, and that’s okay.”

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?

Kristen Wiles: “I think it’s really important to talk to your pediatrician when you have questions about anything including nutrition and childcare as they grow up as well. It’s really important to just consult with them, and I think they can definitely give really, really sound advice.”

Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?

Kristen Wiles: “For the baby monitor go to, and look up “Motorola Baby Monitor” and other than that I would definitely just consult my physician.”
