Brights, bold prints and tailored suits were some of the top trends for men this past spring and summer. But now that fall is upon us, you’re probably wondering what this season’s must haves are! Fashion expert and celebrity stylist Joe Lupo knows a thing or two about men’s fashion. He started his career in the industry selling high end men’s shirts while attending high school and is now one of the most sought-after experts in the field, working with the likes of Oprah Winfrey’s stylist Andre Walker, organizational guru Julie Morgenstern and William Morris power agent Joni Evans to name a few. Joe joined us recently to chat about men’s fashion trends for fall and the must have grooming gadgets every guy needs to look his best this season!
Candace Rose: With fall upon us, what are the latest trends in men’s fashion?
Joe Lupo: “The latest trends in men’s fashion are mixing textures and patterns. It’s deep rich beautiful colors. It’s jackets with soft shoulders. I’m going to show you a few examples here today that I’ve pulled:
This particular example is back to basics for business. This is all from Men’s Wearhouse. This suit I like a lot because it has a little bit of a texture to it. It’s all about shades of gray this fall. Gray seems to be the new navy, the new black, the new brown. I really, really like it. This has texture to it, so we’re doing tonal dressing here. We have an eggplant pocket square- I like a pocket square because I really feel it finishes the look and it’s a special extra little touch. Purple tie, lavender shirt, so tonal dressing is big. A great thing about this also, is that if he were to want to go out in the evening after work, remove the tie, unbutton the button, leave the pocket square; put on some skinny dark denim jeans and he’s ready to go for date night.
Also what’s back, I’m really seeing a lot of are pea coats. I love this particular pea coat- it’s utilitarian, it’s functional, it’s sexy and looks good on everybody. I paired this with a deep rich burgundy V-neck, a textured tie and a stripe shirt, and then put it with a dark gray Lucky brand denim.
What I’m wearing right now (see above) is by Pronto Blue, it’s a soft jacket- soft jacket meaning soft shoulders, and not too much structure. I really like the idea of this whole thing is because what it does is this look gives me the versatility of feeling like I’m dressed, but still feeling very casual. It’s comfortable, it’s easy to move in. I think this is a piece that would be an amazing addition to a man’s wardrobe for fall.
Also one thing men have to think about this fall, Candace is grooming. You’re constantly looking at the red carpet, you’re looking at our male celebrities- what’s happening? It’s the beard. A lot of guys are wearing facial hair now, and if you’re doing that you’ve got to make sure you’re keeping it clean. I grew this beard for fall, I love it. I rely solely on the Philips Norelco all-in-one styleshaver. The reason I like this so much because it has multiple settings so if I want a little bit longer beard or I want a shorter beard I can control that completely. It’s also dual ended which means I can get a clean shave on one end or I can work with the beard and the grooming on the other end. If you’re not into facial hair there’s the Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D. This is a really cool thing because as winter comes upon us our skin begins to dry out and becomes very sensitive. This particular razor is amazing because it’s the most sensitive that you can get. You can use it wet or dry.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share?
Joe Lupo: “I think it’s important that we finish off our looks. A lot of guys think that you don’t have to finish off your look, but try something like a scarf- a beautiful cashmere scarf in solid gray because you can wear it with what I’m wearing today (see above), you can wear it with a black coat- anything.”
