Renowned fashion designer Cynthia Rowley joined me earlier this week from her New York studio to share the top fashion trends for fall and spring 2013, discuss New York Fashion Week which kicks off next week, dish on the hottest party of the year: Glamour Live, and much more!
Candace Rose: Bright colors, color blocking and bold prints have been extremely popular this summer. Will these trends be carrying into fall?
Cynthia Rowley: “I think the print story, it’s something people really latched onto. I think people have really been loving all these prints, and I think that will definitely continue, and maybe even into the next season that we’re showing next week (is spring). I think prints, color blocking and I think some of the other things- the mixing of materials, so leather with knit or leather with ‘sweatshirty’ kind of things. Definitely when you talk about prints, more on the bottom rather than the top. Definitely printed bottoms, leggings and printed jeans- more interest on the bottom half than on the top.”
Candace Rose: What are some of your favorite trends this season?
Cynthia Rowley: “Well, I selfishly just gave you all my favorite trends! Definitely that’s what I’ve been wearing almost exclusively- these bonded leggings that we have, and then the sweatshirt with the leather sleeves I’m really excited about. And then there’s dresses with leather skirts addressed to knits so it’s comfortable but still has a polish. I always love mixing a t-shirt with something a little more dressed up. I think for fall the colors are a little more somber. Denim is a big trend too for fall. And for spring I think it’ll lighten up and be more pastel. Mint is a big color that people are talking about for next spring. So that’s a whole year’s worth of trends there.”
Candace Rose: And I love those trends! Can you tell us about Glamour Live?
Cynthia Rowley: “Glamour Live is a party on September 5th that is Glamour magazine and Diet Coke, and together they’re kicking off Fashion Week. It’s the night before Fashion’s Night Out so I think it’ll be very exciting. The month of August, people sort of relax and don’t think about work or fashion or things like that, it’s more summer fun and so I feel like on September 5th that’s a good kick off back to school and back to business. I think it’s going to be a good party. You can follow the events on Diet Coke’s Twitter, and I think it’s going to be fun. I’m going to try to come. It’s a couple of days before my show, so I’m going to try to make it there for 10 minutes and have some serious fun.”
Candace Rose: How fun! I’m jealous, I wish I was attending!!!
Cynthia Rowley: “Well, with so much digital media, you can really kind of feel like you’re there at these events and follow them on Twitter, and check out sites like Style.com, and Vogue.com, and even like designers sites. We always post things and you can sort of feel like you’re there.”
Candace Rose: Absolutely. Can you tell us about Diet Coke’s official t-shirt?
Cynthia Rowley: “Yeah, well Zac Posen and L’Wren Scott and I, we’re all members of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) and we were asked as members to judge this contest that was entries from design schools across the country, and then we chose one designer, which it was really hard to choose. There were so many great entries. Each design was inspired by the new cropped can of Diet Coke, and the new cropped can design. We chose Gustavo Alonso who is a designer from Miami. He won an award which is exciting and it’s great to support new designers. Also, his t-shirt will be available at Target stores starting this weekend throughout the fall. So it’s a fun way to celebrate great design in every day products, which is what Target is known for, and new emerging designers, and the new Diet Coke logo, so it’s all good.”
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you’d like to share with us this morning?
Cynthia Rowley: “Experiment with fashion, take chances. Mix a t-shirt with something a little bit more special. Don’t be afraid to wear some color and prints, even shine and mix it up and have fun.”
Candace Rose: Where can we go for more information?
Cynthia Rowley: “Diet Coke’s Twitter is the best place.”
