Beauty editor Ning Chao joined me yesterday to discuss the must have beauty and hair products for summer! From skincare and makeup products under $11 to a professional flat iron for under $45, Ning has you covered and under budget!
Candace Rose: What's the secret to looking and feeling great this summer?
Ning Chao: "In the summertime we have heat and humidity that we have to deal with, right? So with your hair, you want it to look like it's sleek, it's shiny, it's smooth and you don't want to have any frizz. So my secret weapon is actually a flat iron- it's the Infiniti Pro by Conair. It's a ceramic flat iron which is really important because it's a professional quality iron for under $45. It comes in three different sizes; I use the purple one which is a 1 inch because I like the way that, that feels in my hair. This iron is really great because people think that if you're going to be flat ironing your hair, you're adding an extra step and it's going to take so much longer in the mornings, but they're wrong. When you use a flat iron you don't have to use as much time blow drying your hair and making sure that it's smooth- just so long that your hair is dry, you can run the flatiron through. It heats up in 15 seconds, so it's super quick and then your hair is going to be frizz proof for the rest of the day."
Candace Rose: Is it good for those of us with really thick, coarse hair?
Ning Chao: "Absolutely. This one heats up to 455 degrees, which is the highest temperature possible, so that is really for people with coarse, very difficult to straighten hair. It'll make sure that your hair stays smooth and it stays frizz free all day long."
Candace Rose: What are the must haves in skin care?
Ning Chao: "With skin care you're going to have dry skin because of air conditioning; you're swimming in the pool, so there's going to be chlorine; and the sun, the sun does terrible things to your skin, right. So it's really important to moisturize everyday. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is my favorite because it contains active naturals colloidal oatmeal. Colloidal oatmeal is really great because it's natures anti-inflammatory- it'll help soothe your skin. If you have a sunburn; if you have super sensitive skin, it will help calm it down. It also provides moisture all day long. It won't feel heavy or greasy on your skin. A lot of people don't like to put on a thick cream in the summertime because it feels hot; it makes you feel like you have something on your skin- this one absorbs really quickly. So you put it on when your skin is damp from the shower and it drinks it in like water. It absorbs immediately, but it provides hydration for 24 hours. You don't have to reapply throughout the day; you just put it on once and you're ready to go."
Candace Rose: How about when it comes to makeup, what are some of the biggest trends?
Ning Chao: "So the biggest trend is having a bronze glow, and not so much of a tan. It's more about giving your skin a little bit of a highlight. The Avon Glow collection helps you look like a glowing goddess all year round, and it doesn't make you look too dark. I like the bronzing pearls because it comes in two shades, so you can get warm or cool. And you see how there are a whole bunch of different color pearls in there, they swirl together so you end up with a perfect bronze color for a highlight for your cheekbones; you can use it on the eye area to get a little bit of a glow there. Each product in the Avon Glow collection is under $11, so it's really affordable; you can add a turquoise liner or a new lip gloss to your regular summer makeup routine, so you can summer-ize it. You don't have to throw everything out and start out for the season, you can just add a few things to your wardrobe and your regular routine to make it more appropriate for summer."
Candace Rose: Wonderful! Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
