Travel expert Johnny Jet of JohnnyJet.com joined me recently to discuss the best deals in summer travel and simple tips for avoiding work while you vacation!
Candace Rose: According to Careerbuilder, 30% of workers surveyed plan to take the office with them, and plan to work while on vacation. And 12% feel guilty that they're not working while on vacation. Why do we do this?
Johnny Jet: "We're addicted to travel and technology, and that is a problem. Everyone wants to stay connected and everyone thinks their job is 24/7. I don't think that there's such thing as a 9-5 job anymore, and that's one of the main reasons. Another reason people like to share their travel so they're always uploading photos to their Facebook page or Twitter or whatever. I can see the trend when I travel."
Candace Rose: How can we break ourselves of this so we can unplug and unwind?
Johnny Jet: "One of the best things to do is to leave your technology at home. But if you can't do that- first of all you should send an out of office reply. That way everyone knows you're going off the grid for however long you're going. And then when you do go on vacation and have to bring your technology with you, have your loved one put it in the safe for you and hide the code. And if that doesn't work and they're just as guilty as you are, then have the front desk hold it for you. Say 'don't give this to us unless in an emergency or at checkout'- and that's one way to do it."
Candace Rose: The economy has affected so many of us, do you have any tips to help us save money on our next trip, or so we may be able to take a little getaway more often?
Johnny Jet: "One of the best things to do is to sign up to every airline, cruise line, hotel and car rental newsletter. Also, follow people on Twitter, Facebook and those companies because a lot of these companies have these special deals where they only post there. One of the hot ones out right now is IHG's which is a hotel group that has Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza- they have a deal where if you spend two consecutive weekend nights from now until September 3rd, you'll get a $75 prepaid gift card for just registering. It just takes a couple minutes, and you can go to IHG.com/Get75 for that. I just mentioned a deal on my Twitter handle, where I saw a deal from L.A. to Peru for $234 round trip. That's unheard of. Roundtrip. I had 30 of my friends (in L.A.) buy that ticket, and they had no plans of going to Peru. But there are deals out there, you just need to know where to look."
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
