Interview: 2012 Self Healthy Food Awards with Self Magazine’s Nutrition Director Carin Gorrell


 Self magazine's Nutrition Director Carin Gorrell stopped by recently to share the results of Self's 4th annual Food Awards and discuss how you can enter to win a $1,000 gift card to Whole Foods!

Candace Rose: Can you tell us about the 4th annual Self Healthy Food Awards and how the winners were chosen?

Carin Gorrell: "All of our foods were approved by Self's registered dietitian to be low calorie, low sugar and low fat so they keep you eating healthy. And then Self readers also taste tested everything to make sure they taste great, so they tried 300 foods, we had 71 winners and I've got a few here to talk to you about today starting with breakfast and mom brands.

    Mom brand actually won two awards, and the first one is their Better Oats Raw Pure and Simple oatmeal. This is a great oatmeal, it's 100% certified USDA organic. It's made with organic whole grains and seeds like barley and quinoa and flax. And it has 40 grams of whole grains per serving so that's one great breakfast option.

    And then our other winner today is Mom's Best Toasted Wheat-Fuls, and these are wheat biscuits that are light and toasty. They're made with 100% whole grains, they have 55 grams of whole grains per serving. And not only does this cereal taste really great, it's also very wallet friendly. It's 20-50% less than other natural organic cereals out there so this is another real smart option for breakfast."

Candace Rose: And how about when it comes to healthy meals for lunch and dinner?

Carin Gorrell: "We have a really great frozen option for you today. This was our winner- the Healthy Choice Chicken Parmigiana. It's certified as heart healthy by the American Heart Association, and this is a lightly breaded chicken with marinara, basil and garlic. It's topped with mozzarella and it comes with a side of veggies and also dessert, so you get a whole full meal in one box.

    And then when you're thinking about sides for dinner or just a healthy snack we have a healthy french fry. And our winner was the Alexia Oven Fries and they're made with olive oil and sea salt, and they're made from russet potatoes from the Pacific Northwest, and they only take about 20 minutes in the oven so it's a really great quick side when you're in a rush or just want a healthy snack."

Candace Rose: How about when it comes to dessert?

Carin Gorrell: "So for dessert this is one of my personal favorites- the ice cream winner is the Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light Ice Cream. It tastes exactly like regular ice cream, but it has half the fat and 1/3 fewer calories. So the vanilla flavor won with our Self reader testers, but they have 20+ different flavors to try so you could pick the mint chocolate chip, rocky road and feel totally guilt-free about having ice cream for dessert."
