Actress and fellow dog lover, Sara Rue joined me recently to discuss tips for exercising with your pet, how to find dog friendly trails for you and man's best friend, and 'Malibu Country', her new show debuting this fall!
Candace Rose: We all know how important it is for us to exercise, and it's just as important for our dogs. What can we do to get them fit as well?
Sara Rue: "I think the best thing you can do for your dog is to put their leash on them and take them for a long walk. And whether it's a hike in the mountains or just around your block or your neighborhood, get them out and get them active. Get them consistently moving for 10/15/20 minutes- whatever you think they can take to get them going, because letting them out in the backyard really doesn't do the trick."
Candace Rose: With summer officially here and warmer temperatures on their way, what are the things we need to take with us before heading out for a walk or a hike with our dog?
Sara Rue: "Well, you need to make sure you have water so you and your dog stay hydrated. And if you're going for a long walk you want to bring a snack for yourself and something for your dog. And actually Milk-Bone has this new product which is a trail mix for dogs, and that's something great you can throw in your pocket so they can have something to munch on."
Candace Rose: With the weather getting warmer what's the best time of the day to walk with our pet?
Sara Rue: "I like to walk with my pets as the sun is coming down, like as the sun's setting- so in the early evening; or you can do early morning, but I'm not a morning person so I choose as it's setting. I think the light's prettier that time of day anyway.
This year the American Hiking Association has teamed up with Milk-Bone to create a list of some dog friendly trails and activities in your neighborhood. So it lists from trails all over the country, and you can go to MilkBone.com/TrailMix and get an idea of a great place for you to go with your dog, with your family."
Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?
Sara Rue: "Stay hydrated and try to pick paths or trails that have a lot of shade, if you do go out midday because the sun can get really hot. Just get out and get moving. There can't be anything bad about that."
Candace Rose: And as for you Sara, where will see you next?
Sara Rue: "I'm gearing up to start a new series called 'Malibu Country' starring Reba McEntire, Lily Tomlin and myself. We'll be on ABC in the fall, Friday nights at 8:30."
